This depend and what you are referring to. If you are referring to the texture part a a scar they can be there for life. If you are referring to the pigmentation it can fade. Most of it will usually fade after 1 month, if there is a lot of pigmentation it can take longer. Acne is all about the pores. You can wash your face 3 times a day, but if your skin is inclined, you will still break out.
What you need to do is stay away from greasy foods, keep any type of oil from getting on your face, or any other type of liquid that would plug a pore (That is what a zit is, plugged pore).
To this day, if I eat any type of nuts, I will have a pimple pop up somewhere... Which is REALLY screwed because I love those peanuts they sell at the ball parks.

It can take years. I have heard that the best treatment for acne scars is a chemical peel- which is typically for anti-aging but works for acne scars as well. They're not cheap, and they make your skin look awful for a few days, but my moms best friend had one and I saw her when her face looked awful and I saw her like 3 days later and her skin looked better than mine.
