Good point. It is hard to eat properly when all the foods choices entice you to eat in a way that harms your health. It takes discipline and stubbornness to eat in a healthy way. For diabetics, basically you should stick to eating green and red vegetables (skip the carrots because of the high sugar content) and lean meats (skinless chicken, turkey and fish). Avoid all white foods (bread, potatoes, pasta). also, drink chamomile tea. Recent research has found that those who drink chamomile tea daily have lower blood sugar.Health Question & Answer

Because there is no simple answer good or bad. Many things are in grey zone and many things depend on time and various other things.

This is especially true for diabetics, as this means that body has problem controlling levels of sugar in blood, so you have to control this with medications and eating habits. Both too low sugar levels and too high are bad, so in one case you need to intake sugar, in other case you have to avoid sugar and increase insulin dosage.

The doctors have to prepare a plan of eating that is suitable for your case, including your living style. Health Question & Answer

Well I am actually type one diabetic, and i've been one for 12 years now. =]
Usually diabetics can eat anything. If your on the pump, then it's a whole different story, what you need to learn, is how to carb and how to dose foods properly.

but if your only takeing shots, then you'll have to talk to your diabetic doctor about what doses to give for what kinds of foods or how many carbs are oin them.

But being a DIABETIC doesnt mean that any one certain food is offlimits, we can eat ANYTHING you just need to know how much to dose, so your blood sugar doesnt go too high[hyperglycemia]Health Question & Answer

My husband was diagnosed last year with Type II. He immediately began to walk every day. He cut back on his carbs very severely. He did kind of an Atkins diet, only we are vegetarian, so it was a bit different. You need to set out your goals for carbs, fats, proteins and then work up a diet that will work for you and can stick to. At first measure everything and make sure you understand better what you are eating. It can feel overwhelming, but you can get a grasp of this. Maybe try getting a good understanding of breakfast or lunch first, then work on dinner. My husband went to 20 grams of carbs per meal, at first. He ate lots of almonds or soy type lunch meats, just high protein stuff in between meals or raw vegetables. He didn't count vegetables except starchy ones like potates.

Here are several good sites for learning about foods: www.nutritiondata.com or www.calorieking.com

My huband has continued to exercise and has built up to running several times a day or biking.
Find an exercise that you can stick with and a diet that works for you. My husband cut his A1C results in half in three months. Now, after a year he eats a bit more carbs with meals, and his blood sugar is normal. A1C went from 11 to 5.5.

I hope this helps. Diabetes can be so dangerous. My friend's husband has had strokes and is currently in the hospital having toes removed. It up to you how much you want to turn your life around.

No foods are forbidden, no even sugar. You will get used to what foods to buy, especially if you spend a little time at it now. There are suggested meal plans and helpful guides on diabetes.org. I strive for about 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fats, but I fudge a little between brands for fewer carbs (always under 45g) or fewer fats depending on what the food is.

What works well for a man might not work well for women, Ditto for age and ethnic groups. Different types of diabetes have different freedoms and restrictions. Some people are sensitive to artificial sweeteners, others may have health conditions in addition to the diabetes in which food choices must be balanced. Ditto for lifestyles - a 5 mile a week runner doesn't have the same needs as a the guy who walks around the block once a day. Foods are already labeled - the nutrition label tells you a lot - serving size, percent and grams of carbs, fats, proteins, cholesteral, sodium. The ingrediant list you'll figure out. Diabetic and Weight watcher exchanges are on many items (they are fairly interchangable, if you learn to use them it helps).

Manufacturers are not going to go to the additional expense of designing separate packages for different health problems - diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, chron's disease, celiac disease. And frequently, specialty stores have higher prices than the regular grocery stores because they do not have the buying power to purchase in sufficient quantities to be competitive, so the poor aren't going to shop there. Advertising alone would be rather expensive, and not a lot of people want to shop different stores for different items that's why super walmarts work as well as they do - food, furniture and fuzzy slippers all in one stop.

These are the reasons a chain of diabetic food stores is not already in business.

Yeah, I thought about once in business school.
