I wouldn't worry about it. There is no way to determine if you're going to end up with hypothyroidism in the future and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. The panic attacks and stress are more likely to be symptoms of the thyroid problem rather than things that are causing it. The thyroid pill is just synthetic thyroid and it won't do anything weird to you. In fact, the pills are really small. I mean, like the size of a birth control pill. I have taken thyroid medication for about 8 years now and it's just not a big deal. Since it's something that is naturally in your body anyway, there shouldn't be any side effects other than relief of your symptoms. They start you at a low dose anyway and then check your level again in a month or two. And yes, you may end up taking thyroid pills all your life but it will be no big deal at all and it's very common. As I said, I take a pill a day and they're very small. I take it first thing in the morning and then just don't eat anything for an hour afterwards. That's it. I keep the bottle by my bed and take it when I wake up. It's absolutely no big deal and I wouldn't worry about it at all. Health Question & Answer

You need a new doctor.

If my TSH were 10, I would feel dead. I bet you will too. My skin would be flaking off, my hair would be falling out, I wouldn't be able to walk due to muscle cramps, and I wouldn't have enough energy to even get out of bed.

It's malpractice to withhold treatment until you are completely non-functional when you are already sick. you need further testing (free T3 and free T4) and you need treatment. So you need a new doctor.

Iodine has something to do with it, something I remembered from biology class. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with not enough iodine, which is a necessary part of your diet. Most varieties of table salt contain iodine, but you have to check the label to be sure. Here's a site I found:

It is not so bad to take meds for hypothyroid. I feel so much better. My hair was falling out, dry skin, nails breaking....I take one little pill in the morning about 30 minutes before breakfast and I am good to go. I can tell within one day if I forget to take it.

I have celiac disease to but the hypothyroid was found first. Now that it is under control, I am a new person.

Continue to work towards a solution. Good luck.Health Question & Answer
