Question: Whats the % of americans infected with oral herpes (HSV-type 1) i heard its the most common std is this true.?
Answers:
Hsv-1 causes oral or genital herpes, but is only classed as an std when it causes genital herpes.

As a virus, hsv-1 is actually 'better adapted' to the mouth, so is milder and less infectious when it is on the genitals.

60% of teenagers and adults under 30, and 95% of adults aged 50 and above, are infected with hsv-1 - but most actually have it orally rather than genitally.

Genitally, hsv-1 now accounts for 75% of new genital herpes infections among young female college students, and around 50% of genital herpes infections in young women in general.

Since most hsv-1 infections are oral and therefore not classed as an std, it is technically untrue that it is the most common std.

However, in that anyone with oral or genital hsv-1 can give their partner genital herpes hsv-1 if they perform oral sex/engage in intercourse, then yes, that does mean that 80% of adults are infected with hsv-1 and can therefore give you genital herpes. If people didn't differentiate between oral infections and genital ones (of the same virus) by calling one a 'cold sore' and the other a 'sexually transmitted disease' then you could definitely call hsv-1 the most common (sexually) transmitted disease.

The most common std is actually genital hsv-2, with which approximately 25-33% of women (55% in some groups) are infected.

HPV (responsible for changes leading to cervical cancer and also visible warts) is often called the most common std. However, it is a family of viruses, strains of which all have numbers (16 and 18 being very common strains). If you have had a couple of sexual partners, there is a 50% likelihood you have at least one strain of hpv. Most sexually active adults will catch at least one kind of hpv in their lifetime. Condoms do not offer much protection against either hsv or hpv.

The other most common std is chlamydia, which is carried by 1 in 10 sexually active adults.Health Question & Answer

Oral herpes is not an STD.

Oral herpes (which is most often caused by an oral HSV1 infection, but can be caused by HSV2) is most often caught in childhood from kissing relatives. Most adults have it, and I've heard statistics of upward of 90% of the elderly have oral HSV1.

Perhaps you are thinking of genital HSV1.? I know that HPV is also quite common.

I would suggest typing "most common STD in United States" into a search engine, to get a reliable answer. Health Question & Answer

As of 2000, in the United States, there are 45 million adolescents and adults infected with HSV1. It is very common. That's why you can't kiss everyone, nor have oral sex with everyone. 15% of all genital herpes infections are caused by HSV type 1, and are believed to be the result of mouth-to-genital contact.

Safe Sex or No SexHealth Question & Answer

that is a very complicated question because usually HSV-type 1 is only on the mouth and is only rarely spread to the gentials, even with oral sex. I think the ratio of HSV 1 to HSV 2 on the genitals in 90 to 10. So I technically wouldn't classify HSV 1 as a std. If you don't, HPV is by far the most common STD. 80% of all women have HPV at some point in their lives. Health Question & Answer

its not an std, by that logic getting a cold can be considered an std if you got it by kissing someone.Health Question & Answer

Go to wikipedia.com they call it canker sore. Even kids get it.Health Question & Answer
