Could this possibly be a kidney stone?!

Question: Could this possibly be a kidney stone.?
A few days ago I was in such pain that I decided to go to the Er ( after being in pain for 2 days) The pain got so bad as to where I could not move. It was located bout an inch under my rib cage on my right side and went into my back. Sharp stabbing pain when moving but when peeing it was more of a pressure. The Er did a urine test and that was the only test they did. they confirmed a UTI and gave me a pain shot and some meds to take for the next week along with some other med to just take for 2 days. Well Im done with the one medicine and it did not give me any relief from my pain at all. I called my family Dr and they wont be in until Monday. Now the pain is located about 2 inches above my pelvic bone on the right side. Its a horrible stabbing pain every time I move. Tylenol is not helping at all anymore and Im just in bed with a heating pad praying that it stops before I go insane! My hubby is out of town for a job interview and wont be back until 5pm so I cant go to the Er until then. Is it possible that the urine test didnt detect a kidney stone.? Please help if you can. Should I wait it out or go back to the ERHealth Question & Answer

I've had kidney stones and thety are the most painful thing there is (confirmed by a woman I met who has had 5 children and said kidney stone was much more painful). Pain seems to stay just above pelvis but affects back and front. In my case I was on the floor chewing the carpet the first time I had one. If you have had kids, is it more painful than that.? If not it probably is not a stone.

Urine test will not detect a kidney stone but if they have given you antibiotics they may have found an infection which can also be painful.

Suggest you wait till hubby back and if still a problem go back to ER.

I think you need an ultra sound to detect kidney stonesHealth Question & Answer

sounds like it.you will have to pass it.Health Question & Answer

The urine test would only detect protein in your urine or highly concentrated urine. Protein = blood Blood in your urine is an indicator that there is a problem, at which time CT scans would be ordered.

CT scans are more accurate because stones can be translucent (like mine) and X-rays may not detect some types of stones. Blood in your urine is from the stone hitting the wall of the kidney causing infection and thus producing pain. There are not any nerve receptors in your kidneys so you don't feel anything unless there is a problem.

Until you can get into the doctor later today, drink more fluids than you ever have. It is possible that it is trying to pass and this will speed up the process. (And don't worry about it passing and not knowing... they will be able to see on a CT that one has recently passed)

In the meantime, for the pain you can alternate Tylenol and ibuprofen every two hours since they work differently and you would therefore be taking each every four.

Hope this helps. I feel your pain as I have had kidney stones before and have them currently and am waiting for my nephrologist to figure out what is causing the recurrence.Health Question & Answer
