Any information about ALBUMEN in the ICU, please?!

Question: Any information about ALBUMEN in the ICU, please.?
Just found out my relative_whom by the way seems to be doing fine again during this fifth intubation in ICU for COPD/CHF during last two months_is been given albumen. Or is it albumin.? Can someone, please, explain where albumin comes from, what it is necessary for, and for what length of time a person may take this.? I read in dictionary that albumen is the white of the egg.

Any other information about it in medicine is appreciated. The nurse has tried to explain as much as possible, but basically she's said it makes all fluids that have gone to other parts of the body come back to where is needed. She did mention something about arteries.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Albumin is a large protein that circulates with the blood. It's produced mainly in the liver. There are instances when fluids leak out of circulation (blood vessels) and into other tissues of the body, like when a person's albumin levels are too low. By giving albumin through an IV, the doctors are trying to "pull" the fluid back into the circulatory system.Health Question & Answer
