Risks from breathing in smoke from the fireplace?!

Question: Risks from breathing in smoke from the fireplace.?
Our fireplace burned out and the fumes been traveling all over our house do you think it's any safer if we stayed outside for a while.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It depends on what your burning. If it's coal you have to worry about carbon monoxide. If your only burning seasoned hardwoods I wouldn't worry just air out the house. Restart your fireplace and make a hot fire with small kindling. The heat will pull the smoke up the chimney. Make sure you fire is always hot to burn all the creosote in your chimney and to make sure all the smoke is pulled up and out of the fire box.Health Question & Answer

It's probably not the best to breathe in the smoke. Can you get something to cover up the fireplace so the smoke won't come into the house.? Another thing that can happen is that the soot will stain the walls in your house. Wouldn't want that in my lungs.Health Question & Answer
