Does the CPAP Machine Help?!

Question: Does the CPAP Machine Help.?
Recently diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. I woke up 113 times. A CPAP was recommended.

The lack of sleep has had left me depressed, fatigued constantly, severe body aches at times, irritable and have gained 35 pounds.

My question is whether anyone was in a similar situation with the mild apnea and the troublesome symptoms, and whether CPAP helped you.

I will have to pay several hundred dollars out of pocket, and wonder, given the diagnosis of "mild", is it worth the financial investment.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It is most certainly worth the investment & daily chore (proper care of machine- including making sure the water is at correct level)! Waking up 113 times in one night is excessive. It certainly explains your weight gain, illness, chronic exhaustion, snippy mood, etc. The oxygen level at 93 isn't great, which is probably why you've been diagnosed with mild apnea. If oxygen level went under 90, we would give you a tank of oxygen.

I work with residents who have sleep apnea. There is a huge difference in those who comply with the doctors recommendations, and those who don't! Those who don't continue everything you named, along with frequently becoming knocked out- day or night. Life stinks for them! Those who do comply may get annoyed with the straps or the noise of the machine at first, but if they stick with it, they quickly adjust to the minor inconveniences. They feel a heck of a lot better!

Health Question & Answer

Beyond all the answers above, I know that it works. I am a repiratory therapist and have seen and heard the wonderful things people say about their CPAP machines. It gives them a whole new life. As for the money, most insurance companies pay for this machine with a diagnosis of CPAP from your doctor. If you don't have insurance, let the doctor (or his office staff) know and see if they know of anyway of helping you get some financial help for the cost. Good luck.
