If I got an endoscopy through my nose, how far would the doctor have seen down my throat?!

Question: If I got an endoscopy through my nose, how far would the doctor have seen down my throat.?
I've had difficulty swallowing for a bit and got an endoscopy done through my nose, it took about 15 secs. He said everything was ok. I was just wondering IF there was cancer near the bottom of my neck area, if he would've seen it. Now I'm waiting to do a barium swallow. Health Question & Answer

Answers:
What kind of doctor did the endoscopy. I it was an ENT or cancer specialist, they passed the scope down the nose, into the pharyngeal area (inside throat, below the back of your tongue) and probably to the opening of your esophagus. If there was any abnormal growth in this area, the doc would definitely be able to see it. If a gastroenterologist passed the scope, 9 times out of 10 they would put you in a twilight sleep before passing the scope. They would be able to see the same areas as mentioned above but they would also pass the scope into the esophagus, into the stomach, then the upper part of the small intestines.

What kind of trouble swallowing are you having.? There are so many different types of difficulty swallowing. A barium swallow will mainly look at your esophagus, making sure you do not have an obstruction, mass, or even reflux. If the barium swallow is negative and you symptoms continue, you may benefit from a Modified Barium swallow. This test is different than a standard barium. The MBS is performed by a trained speech pathologist. They look in the pharyngeal area, making sure the muscles that protect your airway when you are swallowing and making sure there is nothing going into the airway.

Hope this helps!Health Question & Answer

Endoscopys are through the mouth not the nose. you may have had a nasopharyngeal scope. which is a scope entered through the nose down to the throat., if any tumor is present it can be seen with this scope. In the nose and pharyngeal area.A barium swallow will show any tumor beyond the throat into the esophagus. (what you have called at the bottom of the neck)Health Question & Answer
