Is it common to have nose bleeds and headaches if you have epilepsy?!

Question: Is it common to have nose bleeds and headaches if you have epilepsy.?
My husband was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was a kid. He's 25 now and he is overweight, but otherwise in fairly decent health. He has occasional, sometimes considered common nose bleeds that can be pretty heavy. He has headaches that are fairly common everyday that he complains about. He says that the headaches change places as well. He hasn't had any seizures for the time that I have known and that has been for years. He's been to the doctor and they prescribed for him to take Dilantin twice a day. He doesn't have any health insurance and he doesn't make much money, so continuous doctor visits are tricky. My question is, are nosebleeds normal as well as headaches when you have epilepsy.? Is there anything that can be done to stop them or ease them up.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Those with epilepsy are more prone to headaches than those in general population, about twice as high. The nosebleeds aren't connected to epilepsy. Dilantin is a very old medication used to control seizures, and has a long list of possible side effects. It's possible that the dilantin is causing the nosebleeds. He can call his doctor (the one who prescribes the dilantin) to talk about this possibility. Chances are, the doc is going to want to see him as well as get blood levels - to make sure he's within the therapuetic range. Btw, make sure he tells the doctor about his headaches. They can help him with that. He may just need Aleve or prescription NSAID to help.

I have epilepsy, and started on dilantin as well. It didn't agree with or work for me. Best of luck!Health Question & Answer
