Krista,
Hepatitis C is a virus that attacks the liver. It is a slow and often silent disease with symptoms that often aren't noticed until fibrosis or cirrhosis of the liver has set in. It is blood / blood products communicable, Avoid the blood & you'll be fine. Don't use her hairbrush, nail clippers, toothbrush, or razor. Wear rubber / plastic gloves when cleaning up any blood or blood products and use a 10 % solution of bleach when cleaning them up.
HCV (Hep C) is often caught by a routine ALT / AST liver enzyme test, the problem is that often it is fairly well advanced by the time this test finds it.There are treatments available, and depending on the genotype of the HCV, some of them are fairly effective. Genotype 1a is considered the most difficult to affect what's often referred to as a "cure." It isn't truly a cure it's what is called clearing the virus, meaning that there were no detectable levels of HCV in the blood tested. HCV often returns, sometimes years after clearing it. Type 1 usually clears in about 50% of treated cases, Type 2 about 60%, Types 3 & 4 usually get 80%+ clearing rate.
The problem is that often fibrosis often has begun to set in before HCV is diagnosed. Sometimes cirrhosis has already set in, which means intense scarring of the liver in some areas. HCV is also the leading reason for liver transplants, and the cause of most liver cancer.
It is important to keep this in mind though "Most people die WITH HCV, NOT BECAUSE of it." If your mother has been diagnosed with HCV, the next steps will be blood testing for genotype and probably a liver biopsy to find out the condition of her liver. If her liver isn't real bad, she will probably be offered the choice of treating it now. The two major suppliers of pegalyted interferon are Scherring-Plough & Roche Lab.both have programs to supply those who qualify and don't have insurance or money for treatment.
It isn't a death sentence to find you have HCV, and hopefully her liver isn't deteriorated to the point where transplant is needed. The treatments are getting better, and there is even hope of a true cure coming through in the near future. So keep your spirits up, and understand that she may tire more easily now and have aches & pains she didn't have before, but her eating habits may become more healthy than before she found out about the HCV.
