After chemotherapy..can a female go sterile?!

Question: After chemotherapy..can a female go sterile.?
One of my friends had cancer as a child in her kidney and now she is married and trying to conceive but has no luck. I remember hearing her aunt say that she was sterile due to the chemo..I have never told that to my friend nor plan to but is it possible to go sterile.?

Has anyone out there had chemo and still were able to conceive.?

Thanks!Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately it is a very real possibility to become sterile.
HOWEVER, there is still hope too.
My son was diagnosed at 15, we had no time to consider any other options but to start chemo ASAP! One of my first questions was would he be able to have children. They told me the possibility would be low, but his life chances would be lower if we did not start right away. He is now into his 4th year of remission and 21. He was thinking of marriage and kids, so he went to get checked. They told him he would be able to have children.
The point here is that someone needs to talk with your friend and remind her of the chemo and what it might have done. It's better to know for sure rather than speculate anything. If you are truly her friend talk with her, show her your support, go with her to be checked, and what ever the result, stick with her and help her find her way into mother hood.
Good luck to the both of you.Health Question & Answer

Yes, unfortunately chemo, especially in high doses, can make a woman sterile. The newest thing is to remove one of the woman's ovaries before the chemo, freeze it, and re-implant it later. Women have been able to conceive in this way. This probably was not known when your friend was treated.

While it's highly unlikely for her to conceive now, it is not completely impossible. She should be seen by fertility specialists to see if there's any new treatments that can help her.

Hope this helps...

I've had chemo, and my cousin has had both radiation and chemo, and we both had Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the type of chemo we had, our doctors said we would be sterile for up to 2 years. My cousin tried to get pregnant 2 years to the day after her last chemo treatment and she got pregnant first try. Dont be discouraged. it can happen!!!Health Question & Answer
