Why do I constantly have extreme fatigue?!

Question: Why do I constantly have extreme fatigue.?
I have always had problems with fatigue. I have been to the doctor numerous times, and have been checked for everything under the sun including anemia, diabetes, and every STD you can think of (all, of course, negative). I do struggle with depression, but there is the difference between the fatigue I feel when I am in a low mood, and when my entire body feels weak. I notice it gets worse during the winter time when there is less daylight, especially when I have to wake up in the dark for work or what not. Doctors never take me seriously, and I've wasted tons of money on the same meaningless tests. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be and what I can do to gain some energy.?Health Question & Answer

The Number One symptom of undiagnosed Celiac Disease (CD) is: "unexplained fatigue".

I am guessing that your docs did not test you for CD. Celiac Disease is very common - it occurs in 1:100 Americans, but medical docs are untrained in nutrition so they rarely diagnose it.

CD is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine - the location where most digestion and nutrient absorption occurs. It is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens/gliadins.

The only treatment for CD is to avoid ALL sources of glutens/gliadins in the diet.

Celiac Disease is a very serious disease. With your symptoms it must be considered in the differential diagnosis.

You also stated that you feel worse in the winter. Vitamin D deficiency is an EPIDEMIC. Deficiency is much more severe in the winter. Did your doctors test you for your vitamin D blood levels.? (25-hydroxyvitamin D).

Vitamin D status and supplements have been shown to affect Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

A third consideration for chronic fatigue is heavy metal toxicities (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, etc.) These toxicities are COMMON and rarely considered by medical doctors.

You may want to look for a health care professional that has training in nutrition and environmental health. Naturopathic Physicians, Chiropractors, Certified Clinical Nutritionists (CCNs) and that rare medical doctor trained in "Functional Medicine" or "Environmental Medicine" may be a better choice for you.

I think I know what you mean by there being a difference between the low mood fatigue and what you're feeling when your whole body goes weak. I have issues with the same thing, but for me it turned out to be the difference between mild depression and a more severe clinical depression. Like I have dark moods where I'm still able to function alright, just real tired and blah, but when the brain chemicals go extra wrong- serotonin dips I guess.? - it can make you feel like you're actually physically ill, like you have the flu or something. And it does get worse for a lot of people in the winter, like people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. So I think there's a chance that this worse fatigue of yours might actually be caused by a different level depression, but I couldn't say for sure of course. I really hope you can find help for this, I hate that doctors don't always take it seriously.

Now I know this might sound corny, but if it is depression, I found that it helps to decorate my home in brighter summertime type colors, with pictures of sunflowers and summery type things everywhere. I read somewhere recently that Georgia O'Keeffe used bright colors to make herself feel better but I can't find the reference now. Anyway it might counteract the winter darkness some. also especially in January I make myself exercise 30 min a day, whether I feel like it or not, and that keeps my energy levels up. You just gotta make sure you don't feed the feeling, you know.? Like it starts with darker thoughts which leads to mental fatigue so you lay around more, which only makes you even more tired, which just makes you even more unhappy and so on. Exercise and colors and comedy shows can break the cycle before it gets out of hand.

They also have Light Therapy for people who get the winter blues, some kind of fake sunshine type light.
