Question: Help with 12 year old and type 1.?
I have been a type 1 for over 35 years... My neighbors child was just diagnosed as type 1.... ( 12 year old girl) I have spoken with her, gave her my magazines, but, I feel as though I am the old lady and she really does not want to hear what to do from me.... and when i was her age, i did not want to hear either!!! Is there anyone out there that has some words of wisdom for this girl.?.?.? your help is GREATLY appreciated!Health Question & Answer

She may be going through some or all of the stages of grief - i.e. denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. If she's in the denial stage, then she's not yet ready to hear about what to do. By just being there though, she'll eventually get to the point where she wants to know that she's not alone, and that you're there to helpHealth Question & Answer
Instead of telling her, why don't you show her. try to be around her when it is time to do the things you do. like using your meter, injecting your insulin, checking and calibrating your pump,if you use one. make it seem like it is like nothing out of the ordinary. maybe if she is shown that it really isn't that bothersome to do these things she will open up and ask you questions.
