HIVES and PREDNISONE?!

Question: HIVES and PREDNISONE.?

Hello

I suddenly started experiencing an outbreak of hives ALL over my body..which the 1st night felt like a severe SUNBURN...but then I went to ER and the doc gave me 1 Prednisone and 2 benadryl's..and the hives went away.

He gave me a prescription for prednisone, but I didn't buy the it because it's a steroid and based on my research REALLY bad...

But then I woke up today with hives and rash ALL OVER MY BODY And FACE..my eyes were swollen!...I looked like a monster..it was terrible

so I went to my family doctor and he also prescribed prednisone and reactin

I took 1 of each...BUT..I have an appt with a homeopath which is not covered so I'm paying to see him and also $180 for his medication that he grantee's has NO SIDE EFFECTS...I like the sound of that

Is there ANYONE OUT THERE who has taken prednisone for their hives.?....can you tell me anything more about it.?

I'm scared to take it (I only have enough for about 4-5 days)

I don't feel sick or anything so it's just my skin reacting to something...WHAT IS THAT SOMETHING!.?

I'm worried

First off, try to find out what triggered your allergic reaction. Try washing your bed sheets and clothes and use minimum or no detergent.

Prednisone is a steroid. How it works is that it blocks your immune cells from releasing pro-inflammatory chemicals known as cytokines. Cytokines act as a chain reaction to activate other immune cells which triggers your allergies. By blocking your immune system it blocks your allergy response, that is why it works so well.

However, prednisone mimics your stress hormone cortisol. Think what happens when you stress out.?

First, you blood glucose shoots. Your body burns more energy to deal with stress. However, if your blood glucose levels are too high you will also get insulin spikes to bring it back down. Therefore too much steroid use long term can increase your risk of diabetes.

Secondly, it increases Calcium levels in your blood so it breaks down calcium of your bones. Again long term use can increase your risk of osteoporosis.

However, because you are using it for 4-5 days then the only thing you should worry about is it's immune lowering effect. The immune lowering effects is why this drug is considered a miracle drug especially for people who have transplants or auto-immune diseases (ie asthma, arthritis) and allergies. However, you are more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections --> thats why students cramming for final exams usually develop a cold after the exam.

Another note: Reactine is not an instant relieft medication. It is slow acting and long lasting. You will have to take one tablet once daily and you have to take it for a couple days before you feel it's effects.

also, I know what your homeopath is going to prescribe you. He believes that the immune system can be programmed in such a way that can help you prevent getting allergies.
If he gives you bee pollen; theoretically how it works is that by giveing you small amounts of bee pollen, it will subtlety stimulate your immune response thus slowly fine tuning your immune system to recognize it as "self" and it will stop triggering an allergic reaction. However, what if you are not allergic to bee pollen; then there will be no immune response in the first place. also, whatever he gives you is only specific to whatever he gives you (in this case only bee pollen). Lastly, recognition of the immune system is within the genes and shuffling of genes, it's pretty much trying to win the lottery.Health Question & Answer

Urticaria (or hives) is a skin condition caused by tiny amounts of fluid that leak from blood vessels just under the skin surface. It is also common for hives to be caused by an allergic reaction that results in raised red skin welts. It is also known as uredo. Hives can pop up in times of emotional stress, exercise, heat, or strong sunlight. Often times this extreme occurrence arises on those with sensitive skin.Health Question & Answer

My brother use Pednisolone, and he was fine, it's really helped him. About prednisolone side effects, I can say something wrong, it\s not os much just 3 I found.
Prednisolone side effects:
- Thinning of the skin
- Changes in skin pigmentation
- allergic inflammation of the skin (contact dermatitis)
- Excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis)Health Question & Answer

Prednisone is scary for long term use, but for short term relief of severe reactions it is the best thing. It sounds like you are having severe reactions and instead of spending money at the homeopath I recommend that you spend the money with an immunologist or allergist that can perform testing to determine EXACTLY what is causing the problem. If your skin is in bad shape, they can use the RAST blood test instead of the usual skin testing. Once you know the underlying cause then you can begin to map our your control plan. Then you won't need the prednisone. I had terrible allergies for years until I finally got the right doctor with the right diagnosis and the right control plan. Now I am almost always symptom free and rarely need medication. Good Luck!Health Question & Answer
