Answers:
Handwashing with soap and water is your primary defense. Covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing (preferably with a tissue). Avoiding crowded areas where sick people may be. Avoiding contact with small children (they are little germ incubators) who have sniffles and poor concepts of hygiene.
There are over 200 varieties of rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. They can survive on surfaces for hours. Your best defense is washing your hands often, especially after touching public surfaces (shopping cart handles, doorknobs, telephones) and eating healthy and getting plenty of rest.
