well i know that the chemo drugs have only a short life, they are not kept in the pharmacies they are ordered from drug companies.i know this because this is what my daughter does in her job.Health Question & Answer

It depends.
Some are given in clinics or hospitals by injection or IV infusion and those are usually administered directly to the patient and usually not dispensed to the patient as prescriptions. But some cancer treatments are oral pills or liquids or daily injections that can be given to the patient to use themselves (at home). Some are filled as prescriptions by pharmacies that deal only with those special and very costly drugs but others are filled at regular retail pharmacies.

[edit] I don't know where Thierrysmum's daughter works but everywhere I've worked that treated cancer patients we always stored and prepared chemo drugs in the pharmacy department. Of course we ordered the drugs from drug companies (directly or through wholesalers), then they would sit on the shelf or fridge, waiting to be reconstituted, diluted, or measured when the patient arrived for treatment. There are some highly unstable chemo agents just like some other drugs but most are stored under the same conditions as other medications. It is in their preparation and handling in which one has to take extra care and this was usually done in the pharmacy by specially trained technicians and pharmacists.Health Question & Answer

There are many different types of cancer drugs . . some are highly toxic and are administered only in a clinical or hospital setting . . while others are in pill form and can be taken at home on a daily basis. The hospital pharmacy usually manages all cancer drugs in a hospital . . while special care pharmacies can handle outpatient medicines . . we had our local WalMart pharmacy carry some of the cancer drugs that our son took, but we also had a special pharmacy recommended by our insurance company handle chemo drugs as well . . so . . it can both . . a local pharmacy can handle the drugs, special pharmacies (due to associated costs) clinics, and hospitals all handle chemo drugs . . My local walgreens ordered my temodar and I went and picked it up. They don't stock chemo pills in the pharmacy.Health Question & Answer
