Help me with this stupid rash!?!

Question: Help me with this stupid rash!.?
Last week I started using a benzoyl peroxide lotion. After 2 days it started to irritate my chin near my mouth on both sides so I stopped using it. This has happened to me before and usually goes away quickly if I put a bit of hydrocortizone cream on the area, but this rash will not QUIT. Its not cute, and I feel like a walking rash. Its just a red area with flaky skin. It is not in any shape, but more just blotchy.
I am using a little bit of Bag Balm on one side to see if it helps. As it seems NOTHING is helping.
Anything, really, I appreciate.Health Question & Answer

It's probably irritation from benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl is a drying agent and can cause irritation which can worsen break outs if you use too much or too often. also, people that start off on benzoyl for the first time will be more prone to overdrying etc. initially. Putting hydrocortisone cream/ointment will just make it worse. Hydrocortisone is an antiinflammatory, but for break outs, it will just make things worse when applied topically. (intradermal injections can quickly resolve pimples however it may often leave divots in your skin which can last for quite a while due to fat atrophy---so not really recommended unless you're anticipating a very improtant event like getting married or something). Your skin is flaky and red because of all the irritation from being dry. I would recommend putting a non-comedogenic moisturizer (can try something like Cetaphil which is great and is recommended by dermatologists) for now. It's hard to know for sure if it isn't an infection without seeing your skin, but if it isn't crusty with yellowish fluid etc, it's probably not a superficial skin infection and just dryness instead. If the moisturizer doesn't work after a number of days, you could consider seeing a dermatologist or your primary care doc to see if it's something else.

That being said, benzoyl peroxide is a great cream for acne. Your skin may be sensitive and thus you should use only a thin layer and of a lower concentration of benzoyl. You don't have to use the 10% max strength to derive benefit from it. The advantage of benzoyl versus other drugs such as antibiotic wipes and creams is that the bacteria that often causes acne doesn't become resistant to benzoyl peroxide. Of course you shouldn't restart it until your skin heals.

I'm not a dermatologist.. but i'm boarded in Internal medicine so this stuff is basic. Hope it helps. Health Question & Answer

Sounds like it just got overly dry you have very sensitive skin. Use the hydrocortizone, and stick with sayicilic acid treatments for your breakouts form now on (Neutrogena has the spot treatment wit that.) For the rash just leave it be, as long as you don't put anything on it (maybe A&D ointment, but that is it, (used for diaper rash at the drugstore..)Health Question & Answer
