My cousin has AIDS. How long will he live?!

Question: My cousin has AIDS. How long will he live.?
He has had hiv for about 8 years now, but it has progressed to AIDS over the past two years. His CD4 has been less than 20 for a full year and his HIV viral load recently sky rocked from 300,000 copies to over 6 million copies. He has become resistant to most of the HIV drugs, hes on the last regemine available for him. He has been hospitalized approx 9 times over the past year or so, with severe opputniztices infections. Can some give me an estimate on his life span. His doctors wont give him a solid answer, some doctors say, it can be 1 month or it can be 20 years., life span is simply unknown. But they way hes going, im sure someone can give us an estimate. Health Question & Answer

Answers:
unfortunately the Dr.'s really can't nail down a time frame. it really could be 1 month or he could get lucky and it could be 10 years. his immune system is so compromised that he is open to almost anything that he can catch. Is the regimen he is on now working.? If it is then he needs to stay on top of it and keep himself as healthy as possible. I read about a man who got AIDS in the 80's and was resistant to all of the pills, but was still alive today.

But the Dr.s are right, his lifespan really is unknown. Health Question & Answer

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but it isn't looking good for your cousin. He is on what they call "salvage therapy" now because none of the other meds are working anymore. Was he taking his meds when he should have been.? Most cases of AIDS meds not working anymore is due to a lack of medication discipline. You have to be extremely precise in taking your meds.
