Why can't my mom drink fruit juice during chemotherapy but have fruits?!

Question: Why can't my mom drink fruit juice during chemotherapy but have fruits.?
please please someone help.... my mom is undergoing chemotherapy for thyroid cancer and she is always throwing up, she looks really sad and she starts crying on very trivial matters. I am so disturbed everytime i see her like this. earlier during therapy we were giving her fresh fruit juices... and she felt extremely uplifted because of them....but doctor told us to not give her any type of fruit juice...she is however allowed to have fruits ( really i know its surprising) like orange, banana, and pommegranates. she tells me that doctors don't know anything and keep asking for juices cuz she cannot push down much down her throat anyway...everything tastes horrible to her.
please can someone tell me what is the problem with giving juices.? because doctor is quite hard to get hold of my because father is very religiously taking every word as a final sermon...he does not allow me to ask questions.Health Question & Answer

"Chemotherapy injures cancer cells by creating oxidative damage. As a result, some oncologists recommend that patients avoid supplementing antioxidants if they are undergoing chemotherapy. Limited test tube research occasionally does support the idea that an antioxidant can interfere with oxidative damage to cancer cells. However, most scientific research does not support this supposition."

You are using specific chemotherapy that interferes with cell growth and function. If you are giving substances that help to repair that damage then the thought is that you are making the chemotherapeutic agent less effective. Certain juices such as grape juice may do this more than others. This has nothing to do with natural sugars versus fructose or preservatives verses natural. Juices are a concentrated form of what you get in a single serving of fruit. That's why he is saying regular fruit consumption is ok.... you won't get enough to cause an interference from a single serving of fruit.

There is not good hard scientific studies to show just how much of an interference it actually has and there is a lot of variation between types of juice and anti-oxidant levels. I am sure his thought process is to not have you do something that interferes with the expected results. The first few exposures to chemotherapy are usually the most effective at causing cell death. I don't know how much it would change the results but I would err on the side of caution if it were me needing chemo.

You have to think of it as the chemo's job is to kill. You do not want to SAVE those cells from harm. That would be defeating the reason to do chemo in the first place. I hope this makes sense.Health Question & Answer

Probably has something to do with the complex sugars or other extra preservatives and such that the juices contain. Where as fruit themselves are completely natural and have no extra add-ins such as high fructos corn syrup. Listen to the doctors, they didn't go to college for 8 years or more just to make people not drink juice.Health Question & Answer

Ask the doctor... there shouldn't be any reason why not, according to this... .?page=&keyword=" rel="nofollow">http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/chemo...

Juice generally has more sugar than just fruit, so maybe he was concerned about her drinking juice with too much sugar.? Keep it 100% fruit juice and ask specifically why he doesn't think she should drink it.Health Question & Answer

Perhaps the fresh fruit juice can contain bacteria that her body might not be able to fight off due to the chemo. Fruits get washed and don't grow bacteria like juice. Call and ask the doctor if she can have like Gerber baby juice - it is pasturized. Maybe she could eat some baby food - like peaches. Health Question & Answer

My guess is that juice is too acidic and will cause more harm than relief. Bases like milk would be better at this time. I'm sorry for the fact that your mom is battling cancer but thyroid cancer is the easiest to treat. I will keep your family in my prayers.Health Question & Answer

Interesting question i.e. meaning I do not have the proper knowledge to answer. Most fruit juices are mostly from apples. Cheap and do provide some benefits with alot of sugar. The sugar in fruit juices could be the reason.Health Question & Answer

Fruit juices always have some sort of sugar substance, artificial or not.
It's possible that the sugar in the juice doesn't help her system at all so they're advising she doesn't have fruit juice.Health Question & Answer

well my dad went through chemo about 2 years now and about a year now he died from lung cancer because it spread

im not sure but i dont think the doctors let him eat during therapy everyhting taste bad to him though even water
Health Question & Answer

Because the one thing that there is very little of in these drinks is fit juice. Lots of chemicals and sweeteners but little fruit juice.Health Question & Answer

There is no problem with sugar. There is no problem with fruit juice. There is a problem with unpasteurized juice or milk (or honey), since they can contain bacteria that can cause a life-threatening infection in a chemo patient. Likewise fruits or veggies eaten raw -- only fruits with peels are ok for a chemo patient.

But if the doctor is allowing her to throw up and not prescribing drugs to prevent this, then he's an idiot anyway, and I wouldn't pay attention to what he says about fruit juice.

Only buy pasteurized juice, and try to avoid a LOT of acidic juice. Sometimes mixing juice 50-50 with water makes the water taste better ... I know it can taste horrible when you're on chemo.Health Question & Answer

You really should ask the doctor. He likely doesn't even mean all fruit juices. For instance grapefruit juice can interfere with some drugs.

But maybe he does mean all juices and if he does, he likely has a reason. Sometimes doctors just expect people to listen to them and not question but an explanation is in order.

Sometimes it's because the patient tells the doctor one thing and tells their family another.

Or he might just consider fruit juices to be sugar water which is really all they are and wants your mother to get some fiber and such which she will if she eats the fruit.

Ask the doctor.

MarvHealth Question & Answer

Is she neutropenic.? This sounds like she may be on a neutropenic diet. Neutropenic is when the white blood cell count drops below a certain level and she is incredably susceptable to infection. Fresh fruits, veggies, and virtually anything not processed that is grown is a no-no because it naturally contains bacteria, fungi, and chemicals from the growing process. Some docs will allow the patient to eat fruits with thick peels like bananas, as long as the fruit is properly washed and someone else peels it. This is because the peel is so thick the germs and chemicals wont soak through it.

If she is confused about this, you or her one need to ask the doctors to explain it again, because it is HUGELY IMPORTANT to completly understand. IF this is what is going on, eating something that she shouldnt right now could be fatal. Health Question & Answer

Well, even 100% juice has some other chemicals in it. They are introduced in the pasteurizing process. I don't know how old you are, but my Dad was the same way with my Mom. What I did was ask my mom if she minded if I asked questions of the doctor, she didn't mind, so I asked the nurse for a consent form for my Mom to sign. Then I went to her appointments with her, and if I couldn't, I always called the nurse. I feel that the nurse spent more time explaining things to me(I may be partial because I am a nurse).
KUDOS to you for wanting to know information on your Mom's condition!!
Then if you have direct questions you can ask the doctor...please keep in mind that they(doctors) are very, very busy, so keep your questions direct and to the point, otherwise ask the nurse.

Good Luck to You and Your Mom!

Natural chemicals in some fruits are known to interfere with chemotherapy drugs. Doctors now routinely advise patients to avoid foods with those chemicals to make sure you are not compromising the effectiveness of the chemotherapy. Not all fruit juices cause a problem, but the research is relatively new, and the effects of most juices (if they even have an effect) is unknown. Most likely, drinking fruit juice will not affect the chemotherapy, but there's no point in taking chances.

The difference between eating fruit and drinking juice from the same fruit is that certain natural chemicals are much more concentrated in the juice - not always, but sometimes. A person might have to eat a dozen apples to get the same amount of a chemical that would be found in a single glass of juice. Artificially-flavored fruit drinks would probably not raise the same concerns as real fruit juice, so maybe an artificially flavored drink would be a good substitute.Health Question & Answer

Fruit juice is a lot different than the original fruit it comes from. The reason is, the fruit juice, is number one, processed. This means the company of the fruit juice has put in a lot of different ingredients that was added to the fruit put inside the juice. also, a lot of sugar is put into those drinks, which doesn't help at all. Especially if your mom has Chemotherapy. The fruit itself has nothing added to it. That's why it's always better to eat or drink the original thing than the processed one. I hope I helped.

By the way, I am so sorry your mother is going through Chemotherapy. I hope she gets better.Health Question & Answer
