Septra is part of the sulfonamides family of drugs. Heres some quick facts you should know about your medication. Sulfonamides are notorious on the liver, bladder, prostate, and intestines. If you take your pills without sufficient water (1 full glass per pill), you will have very light urine which will leave chunks of toxins in your urinary tract. These toxins can form stones. also, you may feel nassuas and puke if you take the medicine on an empty stomach. There normally isn't any long term effects to the stomach or intestines like there is to the kidneys and bladder.

As you can tell, the medicine you are on is a very strong and potent antibiotic. You also say that you were on zosyn for 6 weeks. Zosyn only comes in IV form, which means you probably had a picc line (catheter to your heart) used for infusion. Your infection is severe (or was). You are either fighting a very strong infection to your tissues or osteomyelitis which is a bone infection. Regardless, I would advise you to take your recovery serious and not jeopardize it for one night of drinking.

also, your veins can take a while to fully recover from the PICC lines. Drinking can thin your blood and make you more vulnerable to bleeding. You may bleed from your arm if the PICC line was removed recently.

However, IT IS YOUR CHOICE, and I can't tell you what to do, I can only help to educate you. The drug you are on is broken down by the liver, and it VERY HARSH on your liver. Alcohol is also broken down by the liver, so the two will be extremely rough on your liver. One night of drinking may not kill you, but if you do it multiple times you will certainly destroy your liver. If you do decide to drink, make sure you take your dose at least an hour before you start drinking, and drink plenty of water throughout the night. I would advise you to drink a glass of water in between drinks if possible.Health Question & Answer

Many antibiotics are broken down by the liver, and so is alcohol. Since the liver can only metabolize so much at one time, overloading it with antibiotics and alcohol increases the risk of liver damage. For this reason, anyone with a diagnosed liver condition, such as Hepatitis B or C, should not drink while taking antibiotics. Depending on the dosage taken, side affects can be increased. Since you are taking it 3x a day I would not recommend drinking alcohol while on septra, mainly due to the increased strain it will place on the liver.Health Question & Answer

While on Septra, adequate fluid intake should be maintained to prevent urinary tract problems and alcohol (a diuretic) is contraindicated. As well, there's a potential for disulfiram-like reactions when alcohol is taken while on Septra. And alcohol delays healing. It's up to you.Health Question & Answer

Antibiotics kill the bad AND the good.It wears down your immune system.
Alcohol is a "poison".It also wears down your immune system.Health Question & Answer

It's most likely not safe to drink while on any antibiotics. Normally it says so right on the pill bottle. Check that and if you don't find an answer call your doctor.Health Question & Answer
