I was told almost 2 weeks ago that I might have Herpes. Well, this is what they told me. They told me the long term test were negative, but the short term was test was still pending. What does that mean.? They said that I probably got if from my husband who has had cold sores in the past. Should we still have have protected sex or protected. We have been together for over 2 years. My doctor said that since we have been together and then the damage has probably already been done and we shouldn't worry about protecting ourselves. Since I got if from him. Should I worry about it at all, or go on with life like nothing is wrong.?Health Question & Answer

Since your husband had it, you were definitely exposed to the virus-as far as the cold sores go. There is a very small chance that you would contact genital herpes from oral herpes, although it is possible. There are a ton of different ways to check for herpes: The recent test, long term, blood tests, fluid from the sore test, etc.
If you knew your husband had herpes over 2 years ago, you probably would have noticed symptoms. I'm thinking this is recent. If I were you, I wouldn't have unprotected sex until my results came back. There is a good chance you haven' contracted it. Herpes is a virus that stays with you for life. If may rear it's ugly head, it may not. The virus will hide out in your nerve cells and can change. I wouldn't worry about it. It is very hard to prevent your spouse from getting herpes since they can be contagious with no sign of an outbreak.
