Why do people think a cold is a reason not to go to work?!

Question: Why do people think a cold is a reason not to go to work.?
I have just recovered from the most nasty, horrible cold that had my eyes streaming, blowing my nose every five minutes, coughing and sneezing and with a severe burning sore throat. And did I take time off.? Did I hell! Have I ever taken time off for a cold.? Nope. I had a particularly nasty cold, worse than your average cold, and I still got my backside into work and got on with it.

This week, the company I work for stated that absence levels were up by 30% because of 'colds'. Pathetic. It really annoys me that I manage to do my job, yet other people think that a little sniffle means a week in bed and getting paid for it too!

Anyone else feel as grumpy about this as I do.?Health Question & Answer

I don't think that anyone should stay home unless it is completely necessary. People who take time off of work or school for little colds and headaches bother me as well. I never miss a day of school unless there is no other option. When I was five I broke my arm after school, I went to the hospital and was there until pretty late in the night. finally got to sleep and I was tossing and turning all night but when the next morning came, I was up and ready for school before my mom was even up. she tried to keep me home but I refused and went to school. People who complain about having colds and are too sick to go into work are just lazy. when they say that they don't want to pass on the bug, they are just making up excuses. Peoples careers should be the most important thing to them, and if they are willing to miss out on work for a little cold, then they don't desearve to go in at all. The world doesn't need any more lazy people. I am with you on this topic 100%Health Question & Answer

I feel grumpy about people who COME to work with colds! Pathetic! That is soooooooooo inconsiderate to expose every other person around you to this bug, then to have them take it home to their famlies etc. Employers give sick time for a reason and if people like you would stay home vs coming to work when they were sick, then the absence levels would not be AT 30%!Health Question & Answer

They should thank you for spreading that cold around. Would you rather have them, stay home and get well, or keep coming back and passing it around. I applaud your efforts for going to work, but if you'd rather ***** on yahoo answers about it and get the cold again be my guest.

I'd rather have extra work to do and feel well, than have a cold or flu or any illness. I have a very week immune system and a cold usually leads me to get walking pneumonia or bronchitis. Not fun.
Stop the bitching and to each their own. Health Question & Answer

may be it's only as simple as they feel miserable and think they deserve to stay out of work until it get easier to cope with. the best excuse i've heard was " i stayed home so nobody would catch it from me
i usually think to myself at this point how you'd get from kissing a tree.?" i never say this out load.Health Question & Answer

Probably because it's common courtesy to not go in to work while you are sick only to spread the virus like wildfire.

People DO have children you know.Children become sicker than adults which in turn gets other children sick and the process goes on and on like a domino effect.Health Question & Answer

I'm not sure that your line of questioning truly belongs in this category. Maybe in a Society category. Anyway, this was more a diatribe than a question.Health Question & Answer

I work in a hospital where everyone's immune system is compromised- so coming to work with a cold is a big no-no. Health Question & Answer

So you don't give the cold to everyone else.Health Question & Answer

I agree with Proud American. I think if someone has a bad cold, they should definitely stay home from work, rather than exposing other employees, customers, patients, etc (depending on the type of business you work for) to their germs.

Edit: You get penalized if you miss only 3 days of work in 12 months.? That's crazy! They expect you to be machines, not human beings! I would NEVER work for a company with such a pathetic sick leave policy!Health Question & Answer
