This is the first time this has happened and I've tried since then to cough up and clear and a slightly yellow mucus came up - no more blood. Health Question & Answer

Firstly, take no notice of the first answer. Actually, dark red, or brown blood being coughed up, is worse than bright red blood, which usually comes from opening small blood vessels, from exessive and forceful coughing, and NOT anything to worry about.

I have a chest infection at present, and have also coughed up a small amount of bright red blood. I was assured by my doctor that it is nothing to be too concerned about, but to keep an eye open for dark red, or brown blood, which indicates something more serious.Health Question & Answer

Firstly, do not worry...... with anyone who has a chest infection which is what you're querying yourself as the tone of the question suggests, occasional blood loss is common.
Persistant coughs cause production of blood in sputum due to the force involved in coughing itself.....forcing a cough (to eject the phlegm) is significant. Due to this excess force, a lot of pressure is exerted onto the vascular bodies in the back of the throat and they burst.
It is a common complaint, if it reoccures seek advice from your general practitioner, otherwise it may never happen again. Though if your suffering a productive cough, you will need anti-biotics, so a trip to a doctor is again advisable.Health Question & Answer

Bright red blood indicates blood with plenty of oxygen in it, therefore in this case, it's blood straight from your lungs. I'd go and see your doctor as soon as possible if I were you.Health Question & Answer

You're probably not going to die, but this is a sign of some viral/bacterial respiratory illnesses. So go to the doctor and you will probably get antibiotics.Health Question & Answer
