Medic alert tattoo? ?!

Question: Medic alert tattoo.? .?
I've been a type 1 diabetic for 10 years. I never wear the bracelets, I'm allergic to every kind it seems, or I just forget to wear it. I'm not very responsible...I am 17 years old and I've skipped a few meals and gotten into trouble. My mom wants me to get a medic alert tattoo, but I don't know if that's such a good idea. I know a cure will come eventually, so I thought it would be dumb to have the tattoo when I'm cured.

Is it a good idea.? And where should I get the tattoo.? On my wrist.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Paramedics etc don't look for tattoos like they look for bracelets, and I don't know if they would take it seriously if they did find it.

Get your mom to buy you a gold bracelet - you definitely won't be allergic to that.

It's really important that you where a bracelet or necklace though. I wear one of those bracelets and it possibly saved my life - I was hit by a car 2 years ago and the ambulance people wouldn't have known I was diabetic if I wasn't wearing the bracelet.

I wouldn't recommend it, at least until Medic Alert starts having medics check for them. But maybe someday they'll make temporary tattoos, who knows. Medics check first for bracelets, then for necklaces. Medic Alert offers 14K gold ones, and that's a non-allergenic metal, so you should be fine. The second one down is their cheapest gold one, pricey but you'll have it for a lifetime.

Not to discourage you, but I've been Type 1 for 25 years and a cure has been "right around the corner" since before I got it. Don't live your life thinking it will be cured, you need to assume you'll have it for the rest of your life and take care of yourself accordingly.Health Question & Answer

Paramedics and other health professionals don't look for a medic alert tattoo the way they look for the bracelet or necklace. So many people are all tattooed up right now that medical people may just ignore the ink they see.
There are bracelets make of fabric (neoprene.?) that you wouldn't be alergic too. You shouldn't be allergic to surgical steel or gold. Find one that doesn't irritate your skin and keep it on.Health Question & Answer

why not get one of those medic tags that you can keep tied to your shoe laces. or if you wear something with zipper clip it to the zipper. you dont always have to get a bracelet. or how about necklace not on a medal chain but some kind of fabric, or a small tag as earrings. you are not limited to metal medic alert bracelets. ive seen some that are plastic, rubber, or even actual gold. might be pricey but if you can wear it why not. I'm getting one on my forearm/wrist area.

I have a few tattoo's on my back.

In all honesty, it won't be cured any time soon. Not in the next 50 years at least.

I'm getting a caduceus, with mmy blood type and diabetes on it.

Why don't you buy a few goood tattoo magazines, talk to people who have tattoo's, and talk to a good tattoo artist.

Can't hurt to talk ! Doesn't hurt to get either.Health Question & Answer

I have lots of tattoos (fully sleeved) and I think it's a bad idea. I don't know that medical professionals will look for a tattoo if you're in need of help. Plus, if you're like me you'd end up having a novel of diseases tattooed on you!

also, people will ask you about your tattoo if you get one. Do you really want to talk about your disease to every schmuck that sees it.?Health Question & Answer

i have seen key chains with meidcal things maybe u can get that and just always have it on you .?

what about a dog tag will you be alerigc to that to maybe go to an alergy doctor and they can tell you what your not alerigic to then you can get a braclet or dog tag made of that Health Question & Answer

I, being a peson of many tattoos, think this is a great idea, the only problem with it is, will it be taken seriously if something does happen.? Out of all places yes I would put it on my wrist of forearm in a position easy to read for others.Health Question & Answer

Personally I love the idea because I'm on my third bracelet in a year! If I had one it would be on my wrist, which is where medical personnel would probably look first.Health Question & Answer

They have the new tattoo ink that can be easily erased by certain frequencies of laser light.Health Question & Answer

i was going to get a medic alert tattoo on my inner wrist, but came to the conclusion that a paramedic, if god forbid something happened, would not take it seriously or even notice it in an emergency. they are trained to look for the braclets, chains, etc...
to them anyone could get a tattoo, so they would still go about the regular checks in order anyways. as far as i know blood glucose is a regular thing they check for. esp if the person is passed out.

also i'd mention if your sugars are not in good control you should not get a tattoo because you could easily end up with an infection.

about the cure, sure maybe one will come, but who's to say it'll be in our lifetime.? you still have it now and unfortunately theres nothing you can do about it! i know cos i have it too!!! and believe me its never stopped me doing a damn thing!

if you have problems dealing with it you should talk to a doc or a councellor. its really common esp in teens and young adults to get depressed or rebellious about it.
