How do you handle living with Allergys? Every been in Anaphalixis Shock?!

Question: How do you handle living with Allergys.? Every been in Anaphalixis Shock.?
I had anaphylaxis shock a few weeks back, put me in the hospital for week, 4 of the days I was intubated. I barely made it to the ER. Just had moments to spare. I went today and was tested for foods NO allergy's there. The testing in the hospital showed it was not hereditary. So basically we believe it was from Aspirin. I have had "thought" I may be allergic to it in the past from lip swelling, so I pretty much cut out aspirin. I made a HUGE mistake and took some Alka Seltzer Cold Plus medicine because I felt sick. I did not know Aspirin was in it. Then I went into my tongue swelling and throat shutting close. I will never make the mistake of not reading labels again.
My question to you is how do you go on.? Do you live in fear .? I am afraid. I am so afraid it will happen again. Now I have a baggy in my purse with Epipen, Liquid Benadryl and Liquid Predisizone. I know I will have to use these things in future and the allergist said those things can save my life.
I am grateful I made it through. I am in early 40's have 2 sons, husband, it was quite a scare.
Now what do I do.? How do you live with yours.?
How long did it take you to recover from your shock .?Health Question & Answer

I found out last year around this time that I had severe nut allergies because I too went into anaphylaxsis one night. Mine started with mouth itching. Now, I carry my epi pen, and some benadryl already pre measured( These are great by the way-time saver). I also have an inahler.
I have to say that it is so scary to try new resteraunts, or to go on trips. Do they use nut oils.? Is there cross contamination.?The world becomes a death trap for a long time. You relize that you could very well go into it again, and probably will.

But, you start to get used to it. It becomes routene. You tell people, you start getting into the habit of reading everything you eat or take. You take precautions, and you train people how to use an epi pen. It takes some time to get over the near death aspect, but you learn to deal.Instead of becoming all about your allergy it becomes a big, but managable part of your life. Living in fear isn't a fun way to live, and eventually, you just start to notice the little things, and to stop being fearful. Instead of fear you gain knowledge and caution. And understanding of what others go through.

I have email option on. If you need anything, fell free to email me.

Good Luck to you. I know it's scary, but you WILL learn how to deal with it.Health Question & Answer

I don't know what country you are in, but join your national allergy charity so you can learn from others how to live with this,..

Because you reaction is to asprin you may need referral to a dietitian to get an awareness of which foods contain a lot of salycylate.Health Question & Answer

It sounds like you are very seriously allergic to aspirin. You may also want to be careful with foods containing yellow #5. It is said to be chemically similar and a lot of people allergic to one are allergic to the other.Health Question & Answer

Hi,

allergies are scary things. Ive had them all my life and i am 19 now, so I guess I havent known any different! Im allergic to milk, eggs and nuts and have to carry epipen everywhere to.

Yeah and you have to be careful because sometimes things first give you a slight reaction (lip swelling) but this totally sensitizes the immune system so if you take it again it can be serious.

I have had a couple of anaphalatic shocks in the past, but recently through being careful havent had one for a while :). mine have never been as serious as yours though....not been in hospital for as long as a week!

Although they are pretty scary, its not the worst thing you could have, Just be careful and with time you will get totally used to checking labels etc. and if you have a small reaction to something beware it could be a lot lot worse next time you take it!

As long as people around you know about your allergies and you carry your medicine everywhere the risks are kept to a minimum. and if in doubt dont take something....once you start slipping the standards it gets dangerous!

sorry to blabber on lol.

hope this helps and anything else ye wanna ask email me :)

My friend had an anaphylactic reaction to aspirin last year. Never was allergic to it before, just came up out of nowhere. I have milder allergies that are at the point to JUST being very annoying and interfering with my everday life but not bad enough to send me into shock.

If you have reacted to aspirin before, you should avoid anything with salycilate in it. You can find a list online of all products. Pepto Bismo is one you should not take! also acne medicines or lotions with salycilic acid can cause a reaction too.

I'm glad you are ok too! Keep your epipen with you at all time. also you might consider getting one of those medical braclets to wear or card for your wallet that states your allergies too.Health Question & Answer
