Permanent retainer?!?!

Question: Permanent retainer.?!.?
I just got my braces off and I have this wire glued to the back of my bottom teeth called a permanent retainer. Does that mean I have to wear it forever and they will never take it out.? I also have a plastic removable retainer for both top and bottom teeth when I sleep. Why do I have the permanent one then.? My Mom never had a permanent retainer and her teeth are still fine.Health Question & Answer

I had a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth for awhile. I had mine removed because my mom wanted my bottom teeth straighter so I got a different removable retainer to fix that. When the dentist took the permanent one off he told me that it is there so that your teeth do not shift when you wisdom teeth come in. They normally remove them around the age of 30.Health Question & Answer

Yes you will have to wear it forever and never take it off, that's why it's called permanent. Well you can't put retainers on the bottom teeth, that's why they're permanent, because your tongue is in the way. It all depends on if you had braces before. Those who have braces, need to get permanent ones because your teeth can easily shift. So thank God you have those there or you would have to get braces again. Health Question & Answer

Permanent retainers are given when the dentist feels that the chances of relapse are more. It is not given in every case and mostly it is there for lifetime. You must be having quite a complicated case where the tooth movement is required more that due to this you have been given plastic retainers along with fixed retainers wear. OMG! i was just at the orthadontist ans he said i had to get that... along with braces, metal spikes, and a head guard... it sucks... but yea it will stay on forever unless u wish to have it come off, then they can get it to come off... the reson u have it is that eyour tounge pushes up against your bottem teeth when you swallow... and my orthadontist said that with out the metal bar he is setting me up to fail because sooner or later i will take out the plastic one and your teeth will quickly move back to the way there were before the braces... i hope i helpedHealth Question & Answer

some people's teeth tend to shift more than others, i have a permanent retainer and i am so glad! give it a week and you wont even notice it's there. The first few days it feels so huge and weird, but so did braces the first day. you are not required to keep anything on your teeth, but id recommend at least for a good few years to keep everything in placeHealth Question & Answer

i have one for about 10yrs now, i assume its there forever! i cant imagine why you would need the plastic as well, maybe its just for the first few months when the teeth are most likely to move as the pernament brace is not as strong as braces..i broke mine a few times!! enjoy your beautiful new smile:)Health Question & Answer
