My gums bleed when I floss?!
Question: My gums bleed when I floss.?
I am 22 years old, a bit susceptible to cavities. I brush twice everyday, but was told by my dentist that I wasn't brushing down towards my gums enough, and that I need to floss or I will lose my teeth by 30. I am careful to do this, but I realize I don't do it as much. Occasionally my teeth bleed when I apply pressure when brushing.
I tried flossing a few times but my gums just bleed.
What is going on.?Health Question & Answer

gums toughen up over time when you floss even semi-regularly.. like every other day say. you can also get a baby tooth brush and lightly massage the gums to help toughen them up. as for bleeding when you brush, make sure your brush-head is a soft and that you dont brush too hard. you wiggle it along the gumline a little and then brush your stroke downwards away from the gumline. Sonic toothbrushes are really good for people with gum issues. Health Question & Answer
From what I've read, the most common cause is tartar buildup from inadequate plaque removal at the base of the gumline. My gums used to bleed more than 10 years ago,but since I got my teeth cleaned(plaque removed),I don't think I can recall my gums ever bleeding. also I stopped using regular floss a long time ago and switched to plastic pick/flossers. They give you better control while flossing and therefore less trauma to the gums. also, you may want to check the bristles of your toothbrush. In my experience, the stiffer the bristles, the greater the chances of bleeding between teeth and gums.Health Question & Answer
Whats going on.? Probably the begginings of gingivitis.
Why.? Even if your already doing a good job, you obviously need to do a better job.
If i were you i would get a fresh start so to speak by going to the dentist and getting them to clean your teeth with that vibrating thing. That way you will be able to maintain your teeth. Whereas if you dont do that no matter what you do your never gonna get rid of that plaque build up on your own and thats what you need to do.
also flossing is great and once you get used to it isn't half as annoying. also only use a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine (not sure of spelling) as thats the good **** that will kill thew bad ****. the others say they do but they dont.
oh and smoking dont help, i noticed my mouth was alot easier to maintain after quitting. i used to be like you tooHealth Question & Answer

Plaque builds underneath your gums as well as on your teeth. When this happens, buildup of it causes your gums to weaken. It can enter your blood stream and slow down blood flow. It is important to floss well and gently massage your gums. Or else your gums will no longer be strong enough to support your teeth, no matter how healthy the teeth are.Health Question & Answer
thats normal, i don't floss much etiehr, so everytime i do my gums bleed, its because they're not used to it, lack of brushing and flossing, or brushing properly can result in very sensitive gums, and when your gums are sensitive they bleed really easily to floss and such, don't worry about it though, it'll stop after a while if you get on it more often and properlyHealth Question & Answer
