Question: Tmj.... what do i do.? dentist help!.?
okay so i have tmj, i only got diagnosted with it about a month ago,and ive had it for atleast a year that i can remember. im going back to the ortho next week, cuz my primary dentist looks like he has no idea wat tmj is, she wants to make me a night guard..? does anyone have that for tmj, and does it help.? or what other option should i try to help this, and is tmj ever cured.? or do you always have it for the rest of your life.?Health Question & Answer

TMJ or more appropriately TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is a complex thing. Generally speaking, the reason the splint is made is because the muscles are tensing/spasming and causing pain. In patients where this is the primary problem, about 80% will experience relief with a splint.
Other times splints will be used to relieve pressure on the joint.
TMD is rarely cured. The splints help reduce the pain and are generally a good approach. Oftentimes the side effects of surgery or full-mouth reconstruction options can be worse than the "cure." I will almost always recommend a splint as the first option for conservative TMD treatment. Best wishes.Health Question & Answer
