Is riding a bike enough to lose weight?!


Question: Is riding a bike enough to lose weight.?
I am 19, male, 214lbs and 5'9". My goal is to weigh 190.

I ride a bike every day (indoors) at 19-23 mph (start off at 19, finish at 23) for about a half hour. I stop at 10 miles.

Is this a good exercise routine, or should I try to do more.? Is it enough to lose weight and get in shape, or do I need to do other things in addition.? When will I notice a change in how I look and feel.?

I tried doing sit ups (about 25.?) two nights in a row and I was sore for about a week, so I obviously did that wrong. I've also been thinking of cutting lunch or dinner out, how would that work.? Health Question & Answer

Are you riding hard enough to get your heart rate up.? If so, I think this is a good exercise program. Half an hour of moderately challenging exercise most days of the week is all you need for heart health.

Skipping lunch or dinner is a terrible idea. So is skipping breakfast. Your body will go into "starvation mode" and your metabolism will slow down. Instead of cutting out meals, reduce portion size, and make sure that your diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.

Do you belong to a gym.? If so, you might consider doing some exercises for strength. The exercises that will help most with weight loss are compound exercises that work large muscle groups, exercises like squats, deadlifts, rows, presses, and chin-ups or assisted chin-ups. The idea is that if you add a little bit of muscle mass, your metabolism will go up, and it will be easier to lose fat. Riding a bike will work, but riding 10 miles indoors is equivalent to maybe 3 miles outdoors. And, you aren't going to lose any weight riding 3 miles. You'll need to step it up a few notches. Establish a pace at which your breathing will allow you to just barely be able to talk without gasping for air, and keep that pace for at least 10 outdoor miles. (Use this same technique for any type of aerobic exercise... stairmasters, elliptical machines, treadmills, rollerblades, etc.)

The important thing is consistency. You have to keep up the exercise regularly. Choose an activity you enjoy, because if its something you like doing, you are more likely to do it on a regular basis.Health Question & Answer
