Just signed up for the gym but I have a torn ACL?!

Question: Just signed up for the gym but I have a torn ACL.?
My husband has been bugging me and bugging me for us to sign up for a gym, so we finally did last night. Anytime Fitness, which is open 24hrs and i get unlimited tanning (oh yeah).

Anyways... I have a torn ACL in my right knee. Happened back in June and I havnt had surgery for it. (No insurance and surgery would cost $30,000). I cannot run on the treadmill, I don't have the strength in my knee yet for that. What are some good exercises I can do to help strengthen it and still burn calories.?Health Question & Answer

I had ACL reconstruction 2 years ago. Mine was 80% severed.

Some of the things I did in physical therapy after were to SLOWLY do leg raises on a band machine, start with absolutely no weights at all!!! Be very careful to do that or you could injure your knee more. Gradually go up in increments of 5-10 pounds. Do the same thing with resistance, where you pull down with your leg instead of lifting it. Absolutely no weight to start with. If they have bands, put some around both legs just above your knee. Kinda step into the band and have it wrapped around your legs. Stand against a wall and do side steps. I did this down the hall and back up the hall. Don't bend your knee, just step as wide as you can sideways. Be sure to ice after any exercises with your knee.

With a torn ACL, you want to build up the muscles in your leg so that they can resist falls/trips, etc, rather than rely on your ACL to do it.

Good luck!

Email me if you want more of the stuff I did in rehab for my knee.....

Ugh, Oh.... ACL - Take care of that now. Because it is a ligament that does not heal. Unfortunately the guy (or gal) upstairs made a mistake (if you call that, they never make mistakes do they.?) when they made the human beings. This one element in the human body that does not heal when damaged.

Why you should take care of it now.? This ACL depending on the tear can lock up your knee from further functions. also, it can lead to arthritis. I do not want to scare you - but the knee problem leads to hip joint pain and eventually arthritis there as well. See the domino effect.? It gets worse as you age.

ACL tear is a common problem. Depending on your age it can be fixed and fixed for good. New techniques are available today that was not back in the old days. So, at least go for a consultation if not for an operation.
Health Question & Answer

knee injuries are common when training so don't worry. in your situation i would say swimming, this takes pressure off the knee but allows you train if the knee get saw(sorry i cant spell) then have an ice cold bath, that always shorts out my aches and pains.

for strengthening the knee be careful the knee is a hinge joint so should only be moved back wards and forwards, there are simple exercises which you can do like lunges, or when the knee starts to feel better squats.

treadmills induce a lot of pressure on the knee and ankle joints this is why swimming is good, a bike may be more efficient or a cross training, even running on grass can help.

hope i helped you :) get well soonHealth Question & Answer
