Question: Do gymnastics keep a child from growing physically. .?
Most gymnasts are short and I want to enroll my 6 year old.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Gymnastics does not stunt growth. Gymnastics is a sport where shorter people excell, just as basketball is a sport where taller people excell. But playing basketball doesn't cause you to get taller. It is just that those who are smaller tend to be the ones who stick with the sport as it is more suited to them, while taller gymnasts often cant compete at the highest levels and may enjoy the sport much less as it is so much harder and are less inclined to stick with it.

It is true that growth plates can be damaged in the highest levels of gymnastics but this is only in the case of elite gymnastics. Where the girls are training 6-7 hours a day for 6-7 days a week and are some of the top gymnasts in the world. It is quite safe and healthy for any young gymnast as long as they are not training more than 25 hours a week before they are 10 years of age. In all odds if you enroll your daughter she will have just 1 class a week for 1-2 hours. This will increase slowly to 2 or 3 days a week as she gets older, this is very safe.

Kids who are very active in sport will often end upo shorter anyway, if you look at kids today you will notice they are much taller than they used to be. This is because they have increased calorie consumption and decreased activity level. Most kids activities these days are very sedentry including watching TV, computer and video games. The calories they are eating are not being burned up so there are extra's left over for growing. but i know I'd rather have a healthy active kid than a 6 footer any day.

Health Question & Answer

It doesn't stunt growth at all, it's just that the people that usually stick with gymnastics when they grow older are shorter in general. Gymnasts who are shorter are able to perform better and have an easier time at it. That's why most older girls who continue with it are short. But I have seen taller girls, they just have to work a little harder to get their tumbling right. Gymnastics is actually a great sport to start your kids in... it builds muscle and keeps them lean and healthy.Health Question & Answer
