If you don't have any preexisting back problems, then you're probably doing the exercise wrong. Don't go all the way up- lift your body and stay up for couple seconds, then go down. This will put less pressure on your spine and will work your muscles better.
You also need to work your back, not just your abs. When you do sit ups you also put strain on your back, so try to incorporate some back exercises.
If you have any preexisting back problems, or family history of back problems, don't do sit ups on the floor. Get an exercise ball that will take the pressure off your spine. They are about $15-20, and you can use them for many different exercises besides sit ups.Health Question & Answer
