So many misconceptions about protein and protein supplements - where to begin...

1. The product that you are looking at is a low in protein blend. What I mean by this is that it only has whey and casein proteins. Your high end protein blends will also include egg albumen and hydrolyzed proteins. The free form amino acids are a standard in your high end complex blends.

2. These products generally meant to be be taken as you last meal of the day right at bedtime. The whey gives the initial protein supply while the casein gives the sustained release. The high end protein blends are beginning to become more popular with hardcore bodybuilders for use postworkout due to the sustained release of the multiple constituents. Remember that each of the constituents has a positive impact.

3. Protein powders alone will not cause you to lose or gain weight - PERIOD! A clean diet will help you lose weigh and as you will probably increase your protein intake, or at least you complete protein intake, as part of your new diet - this does not mean that the protein alone is making you lose or gain weight.

You do have to watch which "protein" powder you buy as you don't want to mistakenly get a weight gainer, unless that is what you are after. The only difference is the number of carbs, hence calories, in each serving.

4. Taking a protein blend is NOT the same as "eating a can of tuna". Read above.

5. How much protein do you need per day.? This is going to depend on what your daily activities are and what your goals are. If you are wanting to put on mass - initially look at 1.25g per pound of body weight. This is a general number that will vary depending on...

-- how well your body actually uses the nutrients that you feed it
-- what else you body needs the proteins for, remember that muscle building is only one aspect in which protein synthesis occurs
-- what other items are happens with you physiologically and emotionally

Bottom line, use this at night before you go to bed - with water - and if you like the results, look into a better product. For comparison, go to your local shop and look at Optimum Nutrition's Pro Complex.

Good luck!!Health Question & Answer

You probably don't need to spend your money on that stuff. Check out the following excerpt from an interesting website on protein needs:

Most North Americans get more than enough protein daily. In fact, the average American consumes about 50% more than the recommended daily amount. Yet we often see athletes, business executives and weight loss fanatics turning to protein powders, drinks and nutritional bars in their quest for more protein. Is this really necessary.? That depends. It is true that resistance training and endurance workouts can rapidly break down muscle protein. If you exercise heavily, you might need to up your protein intake from the RDA's recommendation of 0.8 g/kg to 1.2-1.8 g/kg.

Let me stress, most people only need 0.8 g of protein per kilogram of body weight. Here is how you calculate it:

1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8 gm/kg = protein gm.

Some people may need more- between 1.2-1.8 g/kg.

Use a lower number if you are in good health and are sedentary. Use a higher number (between 1 and 1.8) if you are under stress, are pregnant, are recovering from an illness, or if you are involved in consistent and intense weight or endurance training.

Example: 154 lb male who is a regular exerciser and lifts weights
154 lbs/2.2 = 70kg
70kg x 1.5 = 105 gm protein/day

Protein drinks are very good to add as a supplement to your diet. I work for a dr and we started a protein drink to our own diets. For most people the average that you need each day is 60g (not 60g of meat either!) usually people think that means more cheeseburgers. But protein in those kinds of drinks actually keeps you fuller longer so you dont overeat throughout the day. We were recommended to take one in the morning upon waking, then between meals which made us eat less (put that with healthier food and that's where the weight loss will come from) and kinda forces you to drink more water (which most people dont get enough of also). It's the creatine that builds muscle mass. My fiance takes one for building muscle mass, I just use a regular protein drink and lost about 17 pounds in 2 months. Talk to your doctor for his recommendations. You dont want something full of sugar and other crap and he will most likely know one that has quality ingredients and is made in a way that doesnt destroy certain qualities of those ingredients. Thats the problem with vitamins that come from GNC, they are made from things that dont allow them to break down in your body which make taking them pointless.Health Question & Answer

Na. Its almost the same as if you were to eat a tuna sandwich if your simply taking it just to take it. All that jibberish talk on the label just makes it sounds like an amazing product. Its protein, simple enough. It is good for you, and yes, most do aid in weight loss since protein itself aids weight loss. Im not sure about the PM since I've never taken that, but I'm assuming its the same concept as regular protein just with a small twist. So your fine, you wont gain weight, its healthy for you.Health Question & Answer
