Diet is a major factor in water retention. First look at your average sodium intake and try to minimize it as much as possible.
Next, nutrition; your body may respond well to a simple change in diet, but it may still be lacking some key nutrients. Be sure to consume the recommended amount of calcium every day and take a high-quality multivitamin to rule out some nutritional deficiencies. To see more dramatic improvement in your fluid levels, you may want to also take some specialized supplements that will aid your circulation and kidney function for more efficient processing of fluids.
These are natural ways to help get rid of water weight. If you keep gaining weight you might want to see your doc to rule out kidney problems. :)Health Question & Answer

drink more water, and try to stay away from sodium.

when you're retaining water, its because you're out of balance, your body feels that it needs to hold on to it because its not getting enough. which is why people recomend about 64oz a day (well, that and because water helps your body do basic funtions better but thats another story). so yes, drink more water. the more you drink regularly, the less your body feels it needs to hold on to.

here is a personal example: when i first started my "diet" about 2 years ago, i was a diet coke fiend. i was drinking about 6 cans a day. i decided that i was going to be healthier and switch to water. after 4 days, i lost 5lbs of just water weight.

and sodium - when you've been eating too much of it, it makes your body retain even more water. a great example - many people find that after eating chinese food, they get bloated, because chinese food tends to have a LOT (and i mean A LOT) of sodium. i know for me personally, if i have a lot of chinese food for dinner, the next morning my fingers are swollen (to the point where my rings a tight).

so, just try to drink more water ever day. its actually pretty easy once you get used to it. i got up to 10 glasses a day after about 2 months of slowly working my way up. at first its hard, cause its water - and boy does it go thru you. crystal light helped, as did REALLY REALLY cold water (the warmer it is, the less you'll want it). the sodium part is really about your diet, if you're into salty stuff, try to cut back. and pay attention to lables (you'll be shocked how much sodium some stuff has in it - soups especially)Health Question & Answer
