Question: Question for a personal trainer.?
after high school i want to get my personal trainer certification with ifpa. I also want to futher my education with ifpa courses. I was wondering if ifpa is a good choice and do personal trainers make a decent salary.? Do they usually start off working at like a fitness center and then usually start have their own clients eventually. I just want a good gameplan for having a personal trainer career and how much they usually make at fitness centers like Curves, Snap Fitness or something like that.Health Question & Answer

I don't know much about ifpa. Just make sure that the organization you get certified with is accepted by the place you work at, assuming you want to work at a gym. If you are an independent contractor, it doesn't matter. I would really focus on educating yourself and studying as much material as possible since most of these organizations only give you the minimum in education in my opinion.

Most personal trainers dont make alot of money because they don't know how to get clients and usually work at a place that takes a huge percentage of your money. That's why you should learn all about the business and marketing aspects of personal training. Personal training can be a very lucrative career if you are smart about how you do your business. For example, instead of focusing so much on one on one training, you can train small groups or even do fitness bootcamps and train large groups and make more money per hour. There are so many ways you can make money as a fitness trainer other than just training, like nutritional counseling, speed & agility camps, speaking engagements, making your own fitness products, etc... The sky is the limit.

By the way, Curves doesn't really hire certified trainers or at least they only pay them a measley hourly salary so I wouldn't recommend working there. You may want to start working for someone else for a bit to get some experience but I would recommend you become an indepenent contractor once you get a bunch of clients on your own. This way you can be your own boss and make more money.

I would recommend you join a website like www.FitnessThinkTank.com
You can start looking at what other fitness entrepreneurs are doing and ask them questions.

Hope that helps.

Health Question & Answer

i dont think IFPA is a good choice. NASM, and ISSA are two of the top; hard, but most recognized. They do not usually make that great of money. Once you're certified you can apply at a gym and they may be able to help you get clients and you can also get your own. Usually a certain percentage of the pay will go to the gym and the rest to you. Normally you only get paid for whatever clients you have. Kind of like giving piano lessons. You can imagine if you charge $40 an hour (usually set by the gym) and the gym gets 30%, you pay taxes on the rest, you still need to pay for your own health insurance ....just think of how many clients you would need. Best bet is to get into a gym in a rich town. Personal training is best as a part time job, i believeHealth Question & Answer
