Yoga, can I do it?????!

Question: Yoga, can I do it.?.?.?.?.?
I've never done yoga before, and I can barely touch my toes let anyone any of the poses. I have trouble getting down on the floor because I'm so overweight and have back and knee problems.

also, I can't even do one crunch properly no matter how hard I try-I'm that out of shape. I can't even do half a push up.

Is yoga for me.? How do I start.?Health Question & Answer

Anyone can do yoga! Although it can be a little intimidating your first time at a yoga class, just let the instructor know that you are a beginner and they will instruct you in the proper technique so that you do not hurt yourself or push yourself to hard. Never push yourself beyond the feeling of stretching, do not try to do a pose if it hurts. Don't be upset that you aren't as flexible as the other people in the class, they may have been practicing for years.

Yoga is great because it is not a competition, it's all about yourself and getting your body and mind in tune with one another, there's absolutely no reason to compare yourself to anyone else in your yoga class.

Even though it will take a lot of practice before you can do more advanced poses, the benefits of doing yoga are immeasurable for people of all shapes and sizes. It will help you with strength, balance, flexibility and will reduce your stress (I promise!). I can't recommend it enough.

Good luck with your practiceHealth Question & Answer

Yoga can work for anyone. The best way to start is to take a class. Throw on your most comfortable sweats or workout wear and head to a local gym that teaches yoga. I would take a live class as opposed to doing a video. In a live class, the instructor can help you with the poses and stretches.

Most gyms will have the equipment there that you can use, or you can bring your own. If you wish to buy your own, you'll need a yoga mat at the bare minimum. The blocks and straps will be good to have also. Both will help you get more from your stretching. Don't worry if you're not up to par with the rest of the class. Don't worry if the girl next to you can touch her toes without blinking an eye when you can only touch your knees. It's all about practice and going at your own pace. I can't even do a headstand yet, so I'm always left sitting on the floor while the rest of the class is doing their headstands!

Either way, good luck!! Yoga is awesome! Health Question & Answer

Yoga is a great way to stretch yourself fully. Yes you can do it, and I suggest going to the library and borrowing a few books about it and then take it gently. There are several different types of yoga, don't get caught up in the bull about types, just get a feel for what it does for you, it's not magic, just a lighter form of exercise which is probably more effective than many other exercises.Health Question & Answer
