I am very, very overweight?!

Question: I am very, very overweight.?
I have struggled with weight almost my whole life. It seems I have traded my drug addiction for food addiction. Is this possible.? I am so depressed about it. I feel worthless and I look terrible. PLEASE help me!! How can I undo what I have done to myself.?.? I have started losing some weight this week by basically starving myself and only eating when my hunger pains are so bad I feel like I am going to pass out. But I have been down this same road before and I start to make progress and then I throw all my work away by excessively eating. And sometimes even binging and purging because I feel so guilty about eating like a fat pig. PLEASE HELP!!! How do I stop this.? How can I lose weight.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You poor girl. There are a few things to address here, and I plan to help with all of them. Before I begin, I want you to know that I have been there, and still am, battling depression and the bulge. The main things to cover here are depression, and food. They go hand in hand sometimes, and can be used in food deprivation, and constant binging. In order to battle one, you need to take care of both. And when you start feeling good about one of those, chances are both of these will become a challenge instead of a burden. Now, people eat for different reasons. The only reason we really should eat is for survival, but our American diet is awful. We are eating more, and becoming lazier. Example, portion sizes are huge at places. And instead of going to the grocery market to burn off a few calories walking, we now that the option of home delivery. We use elevators instead of stairs. We usually opt for the easier, less evasive option, witch makes us lazy. I speak from experience. I would much rather sit and play video games than go to the gym. Anyway, it sounds like you have depression, low self esteem and too much body fat, all of these combine to make one hell of a battle. If you are depressed, you eat too much (or not at all), you gain weight, and develop very bad self esteem. Vice versa, if you have gained weight for some outlaying source (certain medications for example) gaining weight from that can CCAUSE depression and low self esteem. Now what we get to the source of the problem, I will give you some advice on how to handle things from first hand experience. I am trusting that you really are overweight and do not just have a "sight" problem where you think you are fat, but are not (that goes with low self esteem and the desire to be prettier than the girl in front of you), you never did give you hight and weight. Take a step back and look realize that you may be slowly killing yourself with food. The main reason we eat is for survival, but I don't know one person that does that. A BIG reason we eat is for comfort. You are sad about a guy being a turd-bag so you go to the frezzer and indulge in some double fudge brownie loaded with fat ice cream. We are all guilty of that. That my freind is for two reason. 1. We feel like we've been screwed with and are upset, and that we deserve some ice cream. and 2. We punish ourselves because we think we deserve what we get. Niether is a reason to pick up that gallon of ice cream, but we do it anyway because we are human. That is the first daily affermation you need to give yourself. "I am human. I can make mistakes, and I can face the consiquences. I will work on myself, and my health" ....sounds corney, but a daily kick in the butt to yourself might do you good. (I have to kick myself in the *** everyday to get myself to the gym...I hate working out) Know you will fall, but you will also pick yourself back up again. So, it brings me to exersize and diet..(I know, I'm sorry, so much talking just to get you help) In order to lose weight you need less calories than you burn in the course of the day. Some people diet by decreasing your daily caloric intake by 500 calories. usually this is enough to lose 1lb a week...wich is the safe way...and noon likes that because it won't make you look super thin overnight...this will take patience on your part, and endourence (I lack both, so this is a real chalenge for me) none the less, 1lb or 2 a week is healthy. also during this time you learn to make better choices of food. I find this helps. Instead of having that bag of Doritos, buy some hidden valley ranch dressing mix and eat that (providing you like ranch)....by eating I mean just dab some on your finger and taste it. The flavor will stay in your mouth for a while, and you can have the whole pouch withour busting your diet and it will taste like you ate a bunch of doritos. Just as an example of improvising. also, there are weight watcher deserts if you like ice cream or cake. (stay away from the plain chocolate ice cream though, it's not that good)....the grasshopper pies and brownie ice cream pie thing are good, and you can find them in the frozen dinner section of you local market (don't order online and have home delivery, you can burn probably 20 - 50 calories just by stolling through the isles for 20 minutes, depending on your speed) Don't eat a ton of fruit, but some each day is good, and a good substitute for orange or apple juice wich is loaded with sugar. Avoid soda's especially ones with aspertame or sucrulose....read up on the danges associated with atrificail sweeteners...and know that aspertame was the basis of a heart drug until the makers tasted it and realized they could make a lot more money usuing it as a sweetener. Anyway, soda seems to slow weight loss down...don't know why. also control your portions of alchohol. If you drink everyday, even a little wine, you may not be able to lose as much weight as easily....again I do'nt know why that is. I still drink on the weekends though. Get exersize anywhere you can to burn off extra calories. For example, if you work at a desk all day like I do, there are little things you can do, like leg lifts under the desk, butt squeezes, stretches, stomach tightening, ect...get creative. If you have the wii, the wii fit is a good tool. Don't be discouraged if it tells you that you are overweight, and if it will effect your goal, don't even take the weight test until your ready. I won't even step on a scale until I think I'm ready because I am afraid that If I see something I won't like I will get discouraged and just give up.....as silly as it is, here is what I do. I guess I am a weight that is over what I think my weight really is, so I'm really 145, but I tell myself I am 150, so that when I do get on the scale in a month I'll be happy to see that I lost 10 lbs, when I've really only lost 5 or so.......instant ego boost and reasurance that the exersising is working, even though I train myself to believe that it workes more than it really does. This fibbing to myself keeps me exersising and dieting because I will always see my weight lower than I train myself to believe. BUT know your true weight so that you can keep track of it for real too,,,but keep that tucked away unless you notice that exersizing and dieting is NOT working at all. That is where you will have to pull out the real poundage to discover what you are doing wrong. Perhaps you need to burn more calories, or decrease some portion sizes. Try the weight watchers to control portions.......most people need around 15-18 points a day..depending on your weight. I am 150 (really 145) so I eat around 18 points in a day. The TV dinner s they have are already pre counted for you so you do'nt have to do much math to convert calories-fiber and such to come up with the point calculation. If you are impatient and want to loose 10bs in 2 weeks and you have a LOT of will power, try the Atkins or South Beach diet. I am 5'2", and the biggest I've been is 220lbs. I did the low carb diet, I lost a LOT of weight within 9 months (also got too much loose skin because I didn't exersize while I dieted) . I got down to 130 lbs. Over the years I've fluxuated. gain 10 bls, loose 10 lbs. There are times where I lose weight, and after a while, I get tired of dieting (until this year I just dieted and never exersized)....I never exersized cause I thought I it just burned calories, and I can just eat less to compensate. But, I just found out that it also helps your metabolism speed up on a daily basis even when you are not exersizing. So, exersing will help you reaplace fat with muscle (making it appear that you haven't lost much weight because if you lose 1lb of fat and gain 1lb of muscle, the scale wonn't tell you that)...and that in turn will help you burn more calories during the day. I started going to the gym because now that I have a free gym where I live I have no exuse. I go there every other day to use the epilitptor, or whatever it is...the cross trainer...for 30 minutes (I have asthma so it's awful on me) and the days that I don't go there I lay in front of my TV and watch while I do free weight exersizes, like leg lifts and crunches, are curls, butterflys...stuff like that, until I feel the burn. Then I'll push one more rep before I want to die. Then I reward myself by sewing clothes. I started to sew my own stage costumes. I sing in a rock band and my taste in clothing is hard to find in America, so I have to venture to ebay UK, or China, or Japan to get clothing I like...and pay hell for shipping. I like gothic clothing, but it can't be mall goth wich is what we have at Hot Topic...I only go there as a last resort. So, since I can't find great clothes at reasonable prices I started making my own. ........if you want to see my semi-overweight *** check out our bands websight at www.myspace.com/atrophicsoul ANYWAY....now back to your issue. The point is, after you destroy yourself with exersizing, reward yourself with something that you really enjoy, (not food) like watching TV, playing video games, reading, or shopping...whatever will make you're after workout worth while so you'll keep doing it. Whatever it is, try only rewarding yourself with it AFTER you exersize....even if it's 15 minutes of free weights on the floor. Now that we've covered food and exersize, we need to consider any outside influences or interferiences. Certain medications may make you gain weight, and make it extremely hard to loose it. Most anti-depressants do this (defeating the purpose I must say), as well as most birth control (again....defeating the purpose) If you are taking birth control pills and notice a weight gain side effect, stop them and try something non-hormonal, like the diaphram. If you are taking anti depressants thatHealth Question & Answer

I'd suggest seeing a counselor and/or a nutritionist. You had a drug addiction, and yes many people turn from one addiction to another. You also sound very depressed and down on yourself. Weight watchers and similar programs are great, but it sounds like you could use someone to talk to about the underlying issues. If you are really resistant to seeing a therapist or can't afford it, try a visit to your primary care doctor and he/she can refer you to a nutritionist or someone appropriate to help you with the eating and the other issues.Health Question & Answer

first off yes it is totally possible you have replaced food for the drugs. you are addicted to food therefore starving yourself may work for a day but would never work since you aren't addressing the real problem. see a nutritionist and counselor. if you cannot afford one you can talk to someone at school if you are younger and they may be able to help you. when you start to have a normal relationship with food it will be easier for you to loose weight. you have an addiction.Health Question & Answer

Yes, it is possible to trade a drug addition for a food addiction. Start exercising. Trade your food addiction for an exercise addiction. Starving won't work in the long run. Proper diet and exercise will work. Start walking today. Walk 30 minutes. Then walk 30 minutes every day for a week. Then 60 minutes every day. Add more and more exercise as you get stronger. The exercise will help you lose weight and cure your depression. I lost 60 lb in 8 months through diet and exercise. I have kept it off 3 years. The exercise is the most important part. Good luck. You can do it.Health Question & Answer

For starters, starving yourself is probably the worst thing that you can do. You will just crave for whatever you are starving yourself of and then binge eat.

Honestly I would suggest weight watchers. It has personally worked for me. I would strongly suggest that you attend the meeting if you have time, they are very helpful and the people there are very supportive of your loss, which is very incouraging. also, start excercising if this means you start with a 5 min walk a day to build yourself up then do it!

Whatever you choose just make sure it's healthy and not just starving yourself. Give yourself a lot fo variety to choose from, so that you don't go back to the binge eating or just splurge. GOOD LUCK!Health Question & Answer

Refer to the sites below. For more healthy eating and exercising, explore the site more. I also suggest that you plan out your day. Write down your meals and then go shopping. If you really want to lose you also have to that a positive mentality. If you mess up, just keep going and learn from your mistake. Don't stop because of one mistake.Health Question & Answer

instead of starving eat light meals, for example fruits for breakfast and lunch. and for dinner try eating green veggies and fish or chicken in moderation. excersize often by jogging, running, playing sports. the reason you keep eating excessively is because you starve yourself to the point where your mind takes over and tells you to eat. as long as you diet and excersize you should loose pounds the healty way. and if you continue to starve yourself your body will slowly eat away at your muscles so make sure you eat and get alot of protienHealth Question & Answer

You got fat slowly, so you have to lose it slowly. You have to exercise!!!! Exercise releases pheremones into your head, making you feel good about yourself, and you feel extra good for doing some exercise anyway. So its a great path to fitness, losing weight and feeling good about you. Try setting goals - like this week I'll walk 20mins per day to the park and back. Next week, I'll go past the park another 5mins, and Ill walk faster. Get me.? It won't be easy, but good things never are.Health Question & Answer

i suggest seeing a therapist first off
second, don't starve yourself, it ruins your health for the rest of your life
second, try being a vegetairn or vegan, still take vitmens though if you do. try avoinding ones with Fish in them, but if you take the gummy ones(you can get them for adults now.) they don't have iron in them.
also try making a routine workout schedule
a couple times a week for an hour or soHealth Question & Answer

First off, starving yourself is slowing down your metabolism. So you're actually doing yourself more harm than good there. Eat several (4-6) smaller meals daily and add lots of fresh fruits and veggies to your diet. also a diet high in fiber will keep you full longer so you don't eat as much. Drink water, often times when you feel hungry...you're actually thirsty. Combine these things with working out at least 3 days a week and you will start to lose weight in a healthy way. About 1lb a week. It's tough to start new healthy habits, but it can be done. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

work out! I was starting to get a little hefty and I have been working out everyday for the past 10 weeks. I feel sooo much better about myself and look so much better, I have so much more energy. Do push ups, pull ups, crunches, running, anything just get active..if you work out for an hour everyday, you'll be sick if you gorge, and if you occasionally eat a candy bar or some chips you won't feel so bad because you are working your butt off!Health Question & Answer

i know it sounds weird, but you need to be eating every few hours. don't eat crap tho, eat healthy foods and not in large amounts because then your body has time to digest everything properly instead of large meals all at one time, and then it'll be more prone to start burning calories. also, start walking around your neighborhood. you'll notice a difference in how you feel as well as how you look after a couple months.Health Question & Answer

Beware of looking at before & after photos on diet websites. They are often phony! Scammers will take advantage of people who feel exactly like you do.

Don't starve yourself. You'll only lose hair, muscle (your heart is a muscle!), water, maybe a little fat - and then regain it all. Your metabolism will get slower and it'll just get harder and harder to lose an ounce.

Eat healthy proteins, veggies and fats and take good care of your body.Health Question & Answer

maybe join a weightloss program like weight watcher or jenny craig. or if you want to do it yourself, eat foods that are high in protein, fiber and vitamins, this will fill you up and make you not want to eat as much. stay away from empty calories like starches, sugars, and artificial foods. drink plenty of water and do exercises.Health Question & Answer

don't starve yourself that does other bad things to your body.. but i think you should start by eating healthy, and taking care of your body and then you can start working out.. just be active.. and be patient and consistent with working out and eating healthy.. the results will show..

just take care of yourself first!!Health Question & Answer

Well first starving yourself is definitely not the answer, its not good for your body + it doesn't work very well. . the best answer is to go on a diet + join your local gym, make sure you eat 5 proper healthy meals a day + have at least 30 minutes exercise, it helps you lose abit of weight : DHealth Question & Answer

it sounds like you might want to concider getting a work out instructor. my sister is an amazing one! They will give you a good meal plan, and keep you on a work out schedule. they keep you going when u want to quit, they encourage you and they know how to switch up the schedule enough to get the most weight loss out of your body.

you might want to see a Dr. about the depression, but working out gives you endorphins which make you happier!Health Question & Answer

DONT starve yourselff!! that is so bad for you, and if you starve yourself then big out it confuses your metabolism and casues you to gain weight. I am considering the Lap Band surgery. It looks promising and has been around for I believe 25 years in England but only in the USA for I believe like 6 years. More insurance companies are paying for it now too. you can attend a free seminar in your area. To locate a seminar in your area, go to http://www.lapband.com My bosses friend was in attendance at the meeting we went to and when I first seen her in the parking lot, I thought to myself, why is she here, she is very skinny. Well after we went inside, I found out why when they were passing pics around, this woman had the surgery on Jan. 7th., 2008, the meeting was Jan. 13th., 2009. The woman had lost 89 pounds. She looked amazing. She went from a size 22 to a size 6.

You deserve to be happy, so quit fighting it and give yourself that gift.
When you see your self as deserving of joy you will put your self destructive behariou in the past and live.Health Question & Answer

First of all, not eating will eventually cause you to gain more weight. You have indeed traded one addiction for another. This one will probably be even harder to break You will need some help. Get yourself checked into a clinic for an eating disorder and get on a good routine. When you get home, stick with it and stay away from shows like "best celebrity bodies" ugh. You don't need to be 100 lbs. Start with baby steps. Make sure to get your heart rate up at least once a day. Do something new with your hair to make yourself feel better. AND STOP TALKING BAD ABOUT YOURSELF. That will get you nowhere. Do the best you can with what you have and find a friend to confide in. Good luck!Health Question & Answer
