Can I lose weight JUST by lifting weights?!

Question: Can I lose weight JUST by lifting weights.?
I know that it is good to do some running and other cardio, but because of my asthma I can't do it for long enough periods of time without feeling some symptoms. I am already eating healthy so that is not something that you need to bring up. I'm not looking to lose a lot of weight just 10-20 lbs, and I want to build some muscle. I am also NOT trying to lose weight by a specific time. So can I just lift weights and see some lose a couple of pounds.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Yes, if you lift weights long enough to burn enough calories to have a deficit of 3500 calories a week. Technically, if you ate the proper number of calories, you could lose weight sorting paperclips at your desk all day. Bear in mind though, that muscle weighs more than fat, so as you lose the fat, you may actually gain weight, or break even, and not really see the scale go down that much. I suspect that what you really want to do is lose the fat and gain muscle, not just weigh less, and yes, you can certainly do this as you described.Health Question & Answer

I hope you mean lose a couple of pounds of fat. If you lift weights, you will probably gain weight. The only way to gain muscle mass is to combine resistance training with caloric excess, so you will probably get fatter as well if you continue to eat the way you do now.

Diet is the main control of your body fat percentage. Clean up your diet, and you will lose pounds. Do this while lifting weights, and you will drop fat faster, look better, be more functional, and be healthier.Health Question & Answer

no, depends completely on what is going in your mouth.

building muscle will burn fat, but you wont see it if your diet is poor.

cardio VERY important. more important than pumping weights. if you cant run, walk fast. If you cant walk fast, walk.

getting your cardio up will DEFINITELY help your asthma. heavy weights with minimal reps will build you mass, light weights with more reps will give you definition. but cardio most important.... dont skip it, your lungs will thank you later in life.Health Question & Answer

yeah
if you sweat doing it
your making your fat turn into muscle and if you keep it going
then yeah your loosen weightHealth Question & Answer

you'll lose fat but gain muscle weightHealth Question & Answer

No, since muscle is heavier than fat. You might be in better shape, but being fit does not necessarily equal losing weight.

You still need to do cardio, even if you have asthma. I have asthma and have been doing cardio all my life. In fact, I credit my stronger lungs (resulting from my running) to saving my life when I had a bad attack (I was able to breath with very little lung functioning due to the efficiency of what I had left for lung capacity).

Exercising with asthma is a delicate thing, though. If you want to lose weight, the best thing to do is walk up hill on a tread mill or stairs. However, you don't need to go fast. Go slow and steady and focus on your breathing. I also recommend taking a hit on your rescue inhaler before you start (and again when you are done, if necessary). Of course, if your symptoms start to act up, stop and rest. However, depending on how long it takes for them to subside, you can go back again and pick up where you left off. In doing this, you are conditioning your body to function under duress with lower lung intake. People who live in high elevations (like Colorado) condition themselves to do this because the air is much thinner. Same goes for people with asthma.

Of course, consult your doctor about it. Most doctors WANT you to exercise, but he may have some better advice regarding your particular condition and the severity of your asthma. You shouldn't take advice about such a serious subject from a loser on the internet.

Good luck.Health Question & Answer
