Weight loss depends on your metabolic rate. Your body is in constant need of calories which are then converted in Joules of energy. This energy is what allows you to move. Whenever you eat, you are taking in certain amounts of calories, and in order to lose weight it is quite neccesary to be burning more calories than you are taking in. In order to do that, you have to work out. Large muscles require more calories to sustain which is why people work out at the gym. You can also burn alot of fat calories by running or other cardio work outs.

Drinking coffee is actually rather bad for weight loss as it decreases your metabolic rate in the long. While it does keep you awake, after it is gone your rate drops significantly. The best thing to drink is just basic water. Stay away from caffeinated drinks.Health Question & Answer

Weight loss is caused by a deficit of calories. In general, 3500 calories burned equals 1 pound of weight loss. Your body, depending on your height, weight, and age, will burn somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 calories a day, just to keep you alive. This is called your BMR, and represents the amount of calories necessary to keep your heart pumping and your lungs functioning every day; you would automatically burn this off, even if you stayed motionless in bed all day.

Once you get out of bed, of course, you start burning off more calories. Everything you do, from brushing your teeth to eating, to jogging or playing sports, burns calories. Of course, when we're up and around during the day, we need to eat to nourish our bodies.

Weight loss occurs when you burn off 3500 calories per week more than you take in, factoring in your BMR.

For an example, if you eat 1800 calories a day, you know that you're going to burn off approximately 1500 right off the top. In one week, at 1800 calories, you consume 12600 calories. You burn off 1500 every day, or a total of 10500. That leaves 2100 calories weekly. If you do nothing extra, you will maintain your weight. If you want to lose weight, you must burn off these 2100 calories, plus an additional 1400, and this will take off 1 pound. If you spread those 3500 calories out over 1 week, then you must burn 500 calories a day over and above your BMR. When you consider that even taking a shower or brushing your teeth uses up calories, you can see that that is not such a tall order after all. It's like a bank account that you need to overdraw on a weekly basis by 3500. That means that if you exercise sensibly, even just by going for a 20 minute brisk walk with the dog every day, getting off your bus or train a stop early and walking, taking the stairs and not the elevator, and so on, then in a week you will have lost a pound.

And yes, it really is as simple as that.Health Question & Answer
