Why does my personal trainer tell me not to run?!

Question: Why does my personal trainer tell me not to run.?
He says it will hurt my ankles and tells me the whole "runners have bad pyhysiques" routine. I only run for 45 minutes , so I really do not understand this premise. Is it just to slow down my progress to get more sessions in.?Health Question & Answer

This is the best answer you will get all day:

1) He's right, in this respect: Since running is an aerobic exercise and BURNS muscle along with fat, people who run too much and don't lift weights enough tend to not have any curves or defined muscle, WHATEVER their current weight may be. So even if you get really slim by running... you will look like the nasty cross country girls at school, who nobody wants to date, because they lack any definition, muscle, boobs, butt, etc. They're skeletons.

2) If you don't get enough protein in your diet (the 2 best ways are protein shakes and tuna), then you will also not have good definition, and won't look as good or healthy or defined.

3) Frankly, if you can run for 45 minutes straight, there are only 2 possible options here: either you are already way too skinny and don't want to hear it, and your personal trainer is trying to tell you this GENTLY......

or you are running wayyy too slow and wasting time, and not pushing yourself hard enough.

4) At any rate, running for 45 minutes is too long. If you want the best body, and the most from your time and work-out, you should do THIS running routine (along with weightlifting daily for body-sculpting and definition, of course):

mon, wed, fri- run a hard 2mile run, and then run 8 100m sprints HARD

tues, thurs, sat- do 2 800m sprints, 4 400m sprints, and then do leg plyometrics to work on fast-twich muscles, and get more explosion.

================================

5) All personal trainers want to make money, as does ANYBODY in ANY profession. So yes, of course you having more sessions with him is good for him, since he makes more money. And yes, I'm sure he knows this, and even considered it when he told you to run a little less.

HOWEVER: I- ME- am NOT making any money from you! And I am telling you, STRAIGHT UP, that regardless of whether your personal trainer IS telling you this with making money in mind, or your welfare in mind............... HE IS RIGHT. You hear that.? Idk whether he actually cares about you or not, but he IS telling you to do the right thing, and he IS giving you good advice. So in short: bad motives.? maybe. ...Bad idea.? HELL NO! He has the right idea! Listen to him!

6) Running for 45 minutes daily, especially on a treadmill, hurts your ankles and your feet, and can even lead to arthritis or cracking when you walk. In fact, running on a treadmill PERIOD isn't good for your feet- which is why you should limit how long you run on a treadmill.

7) IF I WERE YOU, I would start doing the running routine I just told you SEPARATE from your personal trainer, OUTSIDE, on a highschool track (around 2 oclock when its warmest, cuz its cold rite now), with good shoes (preferably Asics).

Then you can have your personal trainer focus on getting you to do what you DONT know how to do very well (apparently), which is actually LIFT WEIGHTS and do plyometrics and stuff like that.

8) I repeat for good measure: most people, and NOBODY who actually needs to lose weight, says off-handedly "I ONLY run for 45 minutes" and isn't lying.

So obviously, you DONT need to really lose much weight, if any at all. you need to BUILD MUSCLE and SCULPT UR BODY and get a lower fat %... but your weight is clearly perfectly fine!

9) To prevent your ankles from ever hurting while running, you should do 3 things: A, always get 8-9 hours of sleep a night, try your best to do that... B, take a couple calcium/vitD pills a day, one w/ breakfast and one w/ lunch, to keep ur bones strong...C, always eat healthy foods, dont starve urself, and stay very hydrated, so ur body has the necessary tools to heal and repair itself, as well as build muscle.Health Question & Answer

Running on pavement is really bad for your knees because of the constant impacts, but at the same time the benefits of running out weight the risks significantly. As him what his goal is for you maybe that will explain why he is against it.Health Question & Answer

Runners do have bad physiques. The only runners with decent bodies are sprinters, because they're muscular. Runners are skinny and bony - not muscular and thick.

Edit: "The muscles will make your legs look fatter.."
Haha that's dumb. First off, if he's doing distance running, his body isn't going to build muscle because it won't need it.
Second, you WANT muscles on your legs. What's wrong with you.
Third, http://www.swiftfeetaz.com/mike_running_... is not muscular.Health Question & Answer

It could be, but running actually isn't that great for you. Biking is much better for your knees and lower back. Get on a nice bike machine and move hard!Health Question & Answer
