Does running at an incline build or tone?!

Question: Does running at an incline build or tone.?
I run everyday on my treadmill, I love it and my legs are getting toned but it's becoming pretty easy. I can run 3 miles in about 20 minutes. I want to make it a little harder by adding an incline, but would that make me build muscle instead of staying toned.?Health Question & Answer

The chances of you "building" muscle while running on a treadmill (whether you use an incline or not) are slim to none. If you are looking to change up your routine I suggest doing some intervals a couple of days a week instead of steady state running. Try sprinting as fast as you can for 1 minute and then walking for 2 minutes for a total of 20 minutes. If you want to continue doing steady state cardio (running at the same pace for 20 minutes) you need to change it up a bit. It sounds like your body has gotten used to your current speed and distance so you won't see much change in your body if you continue the way you are. I would suggest either running faster for 20 minutes or varying the incline during a 20 minute run. Keep your body guessing!Health Question & Answer

You might build a little, but it will be minimal - probably not even noticeable. Running long distance is more of a toning sport, rather than a muscle building sport. Happy running! ;-pHealth Question & Answer
