Question on opiate tolerance.?!

Question: Question on opiate tolerance..?
I have grade IV spondylolisthesis and was prescribed Norco and Soma seven years ago. I became addicted to these pills and stopped taking them for two years. Due to a recent car accident I am going to have to start taking these meds again because i cannot tolerate the pain. My question is will I have to start taking the same amount I was before.? Like I mentioned I was abusing them so I was taking 6 times the amount that I was prescribed. Can I expect pain relief from taking them like they will be prescribed or should I expect to have to take the same amount that I used to.? Thanks for your help!Health Question & Answer

There is a big difference between an addiction and having a tolerance to pain meds. Talk to your doctor or nurse honestly about your past medication use to determine the best drug for you. You may need something to help with nerve pain as well, and this should work as a team with the pain med. also, and this is VERY important; Norco and many other pain meds contain acetiminophen, also known as Tylenol. Be very careful of over-the-counter meds which contain Tylenol when taking prescribed meds with Tylenol. Liver failure is a direct result of too much Tylenol! Use Motrin in-between doses if you need to use an additional med.Health Question & Answer

You'll have to take the same amount you were taking before, if not more, to relieve your pain. What you should do is be honest and upfront with your doctor. Let him/her know that you did have a problem in the past with abuse of the Norco. Not only will that raise a red flag for them not to prescribe you the Norco, but rather something else. But, it will also raise a flag to them that you will need a strong dose in order to treat your pain. It is possible to be an addict and still get treated for pain. If you want to be sure that your pain is treated properly, and that you do actually get some relief, then you need to be honest with your doctor. Don't be afraid or ashamed, they deal with that all the time. And if your doctor hasn't ever dealt with it or doesn't know how to deal with it properly, find another doctor. Good luck and take care of yourself!Health Question & Answer

Your tolerence is not the same as 7 yrs ago...take as directed please!!Health Question & Answer

I used to know quite a few people addicted to painkillers. They built up a tolerance as well, but managed to get themselves off the habit. But seeing as how you haven't touched them in so long, it's probably safe to say that your tolerance isn't what it was. Your body has now gotten used to being without them, so if you took a painkiller of 325mg of acetaminophen and 5mg hydrocodone, it should relieve the pain, unless you have a very severe pain. Going so long without something your body gets used to being without, so if you ever do the substance again it will not take as much as before. Like pot. I used to smoke a whole lot when I was a teenager. I used to be able to smoke a whole bowl by myself and still not get as high as when I first ever started. but now when I tried it again at a party for the first time in 6 years, haha one puff pretty much knocked me on my tush and I felt completely stupid and will never touch the stuff again (or anything else) but you understand what I mean though right.?
I, myself had a few teeth removed last year (two wisdom) and the pain was intense for me (I can't do pain either, have a very low threshold for it) and the dentist prescribed me percocet 10's which is 10mg of oxycodone and 325 mg of acetaminophen. I was taking two pills every 4-6 hours for 5 days and then stopped. Then a few months later I had yet another tooth pulled (a premolar the ones that are right behind the canines) and I thought I'd have to take two of the percs again, but just one pill every six hours worked as well as the two for the severe pain from before.
But you should tell your doctor(s) about your past and get it sorted out together with someone who is more knowledgeable than any of us on yahoo.Health Question & Answer
