Answers:
Yes, I had Gastric Bypass in Oct 2007 and it was paid for through Tricare. We have Tricare Prime, my husband is Active Duty AF.

To start the process: You need to get a referral to a Bariatric surgeon from your PCM. You'll have to schedule an appt with your PCM and talk straight with him about your weight. Once you get the referral, you'll be able to schedule an appt with a Bariatric Surgeon. Now, some MTF have bariatrics, some don't. Once you get to see the surgeon, they will want you to have the following: 5 years of documents weight loss (be it weight watchers, jenny craig, whatever), they will want to know all diets you've been on, how long you were on each diet and how much you lost/gained with each diet. They will want to know if you have ever been on a medically supervised diet (this helps), you must be 100 pounds over your ideal weight and you must have been severely overweight (at least 100 lbx over) for at least 5 years. They sometimes require you to see a psychologist (I didn't). You will also be required to see a Nutritionist. Once you the surgeon approves you, Tricare will automatically approve the surgery. Right now, the military is really cutting down on the amount Gastric Bypasses they do. You could be waiting up to 2 years to get it done at an MTF.

You said you had a baby..be aware that you must wait 12 months after giving birth to have the surgery. You also need to seriously be able to have time to workout. After the surgery, you have to be able to excercise at least an hour a day. No excuses, you have to workout for the surgery to be a success. I've put my son in drop-in daycare just for an hour and half just so I could go walk.

I had the surgey and it saved me. It really did. I started out at a size 26 and now I wear a 10. My 5 year old loves that I can play with him now. I'm 32 and like you had my child at 27. I'm a stay-at -home mom and before my son started school it was very hard to get out to the gym and I swear I was always cleaning up after someone. My weight got worse after my husband started deploying all the time. Don't let these people get you down! Hang in there

Believe it or not, after you starting losing weight, you'll get your height back. I was down to 5'7 because of all the extra weight. I actually "grew" 3 inches as my back straightened out as lost weight. I had quite a bit of back pain but it's been totally worth it.

You can e-mail me anytime at evanrudysmommy@yahoo.com if you have any questions at all about the surgery. I had mine done at an MTF.Health Question & Answer

I work with GI patients, and see alot of complications after bypass surgery. I would not recommend it except for a very select group. I would first ask, why are you overweight.?
Do you eat for comfort reasons, in reaction to stress.? All the issues that lead up to the problem should be addressed before letting a scapel near you, in my opinion.Health Question & Answer

Get out and exercise. If you get gastric bypass surgery you have to change the way you eat and live anyway. Just eat right and exercise now and skip the high risk surgery. It's not like gastric bypass is a magic pill that will fix your weight without any effort on your part.Health Question & Answer

You'll have to make an appointment with your PCM (doc) again to discuss your options. It's a pretty safe bet that surgery will not be your first option.Health Question & Answer
