After bypass surgery, is it normal to be put in rehab at a nursing home?!

Question: After bypass surgery, is it normal to be put in rehab at a nursing home.?
for physical therapy.? The nursing home is very depressing as there are people in the last stages of life everywhere. This is having a negative effect on the mood of the patient, who does not need to be in a nursing home, only rehab. Is there a way I can fight to have him moved somewhere else.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
While inhouse acute rehab (such as free standing acute rehabilitation facilities) sounds like a grand idea, the diangostic category underwhich cardiac bypass falls under does not qualify for acute rehabilitation under the Medicare payment system. Rather, subacute rehabiliation has been deemed appropriate after cardiac bypass. This often takes place in nursing homes.

Most nursing homes these days are rarely "nursing homes" anymore, rather, they are often a mix of skilled nursing/rehab and extended care. Chances are, this facility caters to both patient populations. In fact, the vast majority of patients in skilled nursing facilities are there for the very same reason...rehab!!! Most WILL return to community based living. However, nearly all skilled nursing facilities do have permanent "residents" that are there for long term care.

The patient after cardiac bypass will get all the necessary rehab they need in a skilled nursing facility. It would be futile to try to have him moved to an acute rehabilitation facility...because he just doesnt' qualify...unless he's had other complications such as a stroke or other neurological history. The problem is that most re-habs are in hospitals and if the insurance does not want to pay hospital re-hab they send them to a nursing home. I would contact his insurance company and see if there is an alternative to nursing home re-hab. also, it depends on the patient and there motivation level. In hospital re-hab you have to be physically able to participate pretty much all day. If you are not able to do that they usually will recommend nursing home re-hab. Check with insurance company and therapist for other options. Health Question & Answer

Carol, it really depends on the needs of the patient. Is there someone at home all the time to take care of him while he recuperates.? Maybe the surgeon doesn't feel that he would get the necessary care at home that he would get in a nursing home.? Nutrition, etc.

There's some good information in this link:Health Question & Answer

yes, you can have him placed in any facility you choose. the insurance, however, has their preferences based on cost. some of the better facilities can cost a lot more, but if you are willing and able to pay, you can have him put into a better facility. The best way to make sure he is getting proper care at whatever facility he goes to is to visit and stay with him for part of the day (as much as your schedule will allow). also, if you do most of what is needed for him yourself, that leaves the nurses free to do just the rehabilitation portion of his stay. good luck.Health Question & Answer

I call nursing homes "warehouses for those awaiting death". I have spent WAY too many hours/visits to them, as a grandmother, father, and mother all did time.

I can never get the smell out of my head, and will forever remember the long term 'patients' that I would see on each visit.
I'm not crazy about the staff, and the food is, well, institution food.

If you have a chance and the finances, get your loved one to another facility. Serious.Health Question & Answer

Sometimes they place the ones who have nowhere to go & no insurance wherever they can. I had a heart valve replaced & if I wasn't able to hook up home nursing care I would have been placed in a similar environment for 6 weeks. Good luck to your patient.Health Question & Answer

Yes, sometimes it is the best thing. They do that if someone doesn't have a person at home to care for them. You can talk to the doctor and get the arrangment changed usually. There is probably a reason for putting the patient in a nursing home.Health Question & Answer

A nursing home and a skilled nursing facility are different. Put them in a skilled nursing facility, where people of all ages can attend for rehabilitation. Health Question & Answer

It's normal.

Nursing homes offer around the clock care - which is probably what the patient needs.

After a few weeks, if the patient gains strength once again - they will be allowed to go back home................Health Question & Answer

I put my dad in a nursing home last month. It was a hard decision, but I had to do it.Health Question & Answer
