The answer is a little bit of both...you can feel sicker because of your immune system working but you can also get very sick if it isn't. When you get sick..before you mount an immune response, you don't have symptoms. The symptoms (sore throat, fever, runny nose) these are all signs that your immune system is working hard to fight off the illness. On the other hand, having a decreased immune system because of (HIV/AIDS, cancer, autoimmune diseases (lupus, etc)) can also cause you to become very ill, your body is unable to effectivly fight off an illness, even a common cold could kill you.
