Do you really think A.D.D and A.D.H.D exist?!

Question: Do you really think A.D.D and A.D.H.D exist.?
My nephew is 8 years old and he was diagnosed with A.D.H.D when he was 7. I don't think any child has has any of these disorders.Yes at times he is hyper, but there are millions of hyper people.

I read up on some of the medications they prescribe for children and adults with these disorders and they seem to be made with some cocaine. I've spoke to my brother and his wife over and over again to take him off that medicine because he started to do really weird things and also because it had cocaine in it; Like grinding his teeth while he's watching tv, and getting really emotional over things that aren't a big deal. They're giving children these meds with the craziest side effects ever. My niece was diagnosed with A.D.D when she was younger and they prescribed some medicine that was causing her hair to fall out, causing her to be unsocial and losing interest in children activities.

i just think children are being children.....theres nothing wrong with themHealth Question & Answer

I totally agree with the question poser.
What is even more irritating is that A.D.D. pays! One of my patients was saying that government money exists if you claim your child has A.D.D.
I think "A.D.D." is more a symptom of today's times. There is stimulation everywhere.
Perhaps teaching a child to simply focus, taking away his iPod and Xbox is a much easier pill to swallow than some expensive psych drug.
By the way, although I understand ritalin is "heavy" medicine; I don't believe it has any cocaine in it.Health Question & Answer

Never had that stuff when I was growing up or when my son's were growing up and they are fine. I go along with you, although I don't know about the cocaine mixture. I would much rather have a child that is a little hyper than one that is lazy.Health Question & Answer

My wife has been a teacher for 24 years, has had a great deal of experience with ADD and ADHD students, and their issues and challenges with learning. Both are awfully hard to keep on task and ADHD students can be disruptive to other student and their learning in a classroom. ADD can exist "under the radar" (because there isn't the obvious HD) to a teacher and the teacher may just think that the child doesn't "pay attention enough" or "work hard enough"--both of which are a mistake, are not accurate and can really harm a student if ignored.

Accurate and responsible testing WILL bear it out. A responsible pediatrician SHOULD be doing testing himself and then recommending or not recommending medicine. Our son was diagnosed with ADD at age 9, and was having problems with learning. He did take meds over one weekend, and it did throw him into an emotional mess. So we did forego the meds and tried to go without.

But you must keep in mind that attention deficit is actually a disorder and affects a child's ability in "executive function"--that is, the area in the brain that filters out extraneous material. A student in class will be distracted by a bird outside, a pencil dropping on the floor, another child sneezing, a person walking outside the classroom. It's all receiving the same degree of concentration---how frustrating is that .? They also can't organize--ask them to organize a simple paragraph of beginning, middle and end and they find it an impossibility ! That's ADD--but add in the hyperactive diagnosis of HD and it is even worse.

Our child was able to overcome the challenge with a supportive special education teacher who knew what she was doing and helped him to develop organizational strategy. He zoomed from being a C student to an A student in two years. That's phenomenal.

The choice for medicine and usefulness should always be gauged by the parent in tandem with the doctor. Don't always take a doctor's med prescription as "God's" decision. Ritalin can have a positive effect on an ADHD child but at the right levels. It other cases it may be a mistake.Health Question & Answer
