Meperidine...Narcotics...... I have an issue that I would like opinions about.?!

Question: Meperidine...Narcotics...Ok I have an issue that I would like opinions about..?
My daughter, age 9, has been going to see an orthodontist (actually several doctors practice together) & the last 2x's she was given a multi-dose prescription of liquid Meperidine (narcotic) for sedation since she will need dental work. The nurses say for me to give 1 dose to her then bring the remaining doses back to the clinic. So, is this just weird or okay.? Thanx!Health Question & Answer

I would say it is weird if you personally are paying for the work to be done. Other than that if it is state funded, then it is appropriate for them to require medication back if not used, but not the norm because they do not know if it is contaminated at this point, because it was in another persons hands and not theirs, and it is also a liquid and not Just a pill. I was on States medical in Hawaii for a time and they required me to take only part of the meds before going to the hospital, once I arrived, they then told me to take the extra medication. I believe for the most part they want to Monitor their patient, to Make sure there isn't an accidental dosage. Other than that I would request something in writing stating exactly why I am to bring the extra meds back, it is illegal to resubscribe.Health Question & Answer

They must be individual doses. But if they were they would just give you what you need.

Yes it seems strange.Health Question & Answer
