I curled by ankle. If it was swollen badly when the XRAY was taken. Could the MD see a hairline fracture?!

Question: I curled by ankle. If it was swollen badly when the XRAY was taken. Could the MD see a hairline fracture.?
The MD said he didn't see anything on the XRAY which was taken 12 hours after I fell. He said it was probably only sprained. It has been 2 weeks and it still is swollen and hurts. The bone it what is hurting and when I stand on it the pressure shoots pain up my leg. Is that normal with a sprain or could it be something more.? Do I need a second opinion.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I would suggest that you go back to your doctor and request an MRI which can detect a possible hairline fracture or something more than an XRAY can pick up. I am currently having a similar pain with my right ankle and was sent to have an MRI done to verify if I tore ligaments or incurred a hairline fracture.

If you aren't comfortable with your MD, then a second opinion cannot hurt.Health Question & Answer

Second opinion.? Possibly. Even if it is just to help calm your mental ache. As for the pain, if the doc did not see a definite break, a hair-line fracture would most likely not be the cause of any nerves being pinched; that is pinched in the break. That fact that two weeks has past, you still have pain, and a recent shooting of pain in the leg has arisen, it is possible that the original injury was not only inflicted on the foot, but both the leg itself. Many rehabilitating exercises could be used, but for now, simply walk as least as possible. Allow the muscles to relax to help reduce further stress. also, remember that the metatarcels ( little feet bones) are small and though not broken, could be stressed from the "curling" or "rolling" of the foot. Odd enough, cold showers could help; believe it or not!!Health Question & Answer

Used to take X-rays & from what the MDs said it is sometimes better to break a bone than to have a bad sprain.
Have rolled an ankle , no fractures & it took a very long time to heal.
Swelling at the time the films were taken can make it difficult to see fine fractures , but there are other "signs" the docs use to diagnose the problem.
Your ankle & only you can judge the pain.
Your call.

The swelling doesn't effect an x-ray, but if a few weeks go by and it doesn't go down, yea, I'd suggest another look. Maybe the fracture happened during those two weeks.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is normal. Just ice it and elevate it. Try not to put much pressure on it till the swelling goes down.Health Question & Answer
