Will a kneeling chair help with my back while at work?!

Question: Will a kneeling chair help with my back while at work.?
I have degenerative disc disease in my lower back, and am in a lot of pain (especially after sitting at my desk all day). I'm looking for ways to make my work area better and have considered a kneeling chair. My fear is that eventually my knees will hurt too from the kneeling. Any experience.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The problem with kneeling chairs is that they are only good for specific problems. The condition you have may in fact be aggravated by this chair. The chair will place you in a lordotic or increased lower back curve. This might increase the stress on the degenerative processes in the back. Instead take a look at your chair and either alter it or get a new one. The chair should be on wheels, swivel, have arms, a lumbar support, rock, and be adjustable for height. You should be seated in the chair so that your knees are somewhat higher than the hips and you sit all the way back in the chair. If you are working with a computer then the monitor should be at a comfortable height that keeps your head looking forward and now down. The keyboard should be at a level where the arms hang down and are not stretched out in front of you. As far as the over all condition a physical therapist would help you. Strengthening exercises would be very beneficial to you but they should be with someone that knows what they are doing. Aquatics are another thing that would benefit you. Health Question & Answer
